Magnolia paint

Options
Just a quick and dull question. My house is 95% magnolia as it was when we moved in. I have got matchpots of different magnolias and they are all different. Have found one that is really close in B&Q but seems dear considering we are going to slap it on the whole of the insides!

Are B&Q and others value paints any good or am I going to be better off buying a bit dearer to get better coverage? The previous walls were matt which is pants for a house with 2 kids so going to go for silk this time so at least we can scrub off yucky marks!

Cheaper paints tend to require more coats so it costs more. Buy a decent brand and it will be more cost effective.

I used B&Q Matt Magnolia Value range to paint over my lounge walls, which were previously 2 shades of green. Covering your existing magnolia with a slightly different brand and shade should be a doddle.

I must add, when the first coat went on, it looked terrible until it had dried. Then it was only on the darkest green wall that we really had to do the the second coat.

I have 3 kids but always use Matt paint because although it's less "scrubbable". I find Silk tends to highlight any indentations in the walls or bad plastering. But each to their own...:)

There are harder wearing paints such as Dulux Endurance. There is a matt version.

  • Do no do no do not get Wickes Trade Magnolia Matt. It is the stuff of Satan.

I have however found the brilliant white stuff to be ok strangely.

From now on I'll be buying Dulux One Coat stuff for any "plain" colours, as my Mother In Law has had great success with it (the magnolia) and if we'd used it in the hall it would have cost us £25 instead of £70 on paint which still looks god awful.

We have matt on every wall in every room and a small, grubby ds and you can see how his height has changed over the last 3 years as you can track his trail of mucky destruction - the whole house was rebuilt before we bought it so the plaster is in good nick, but we can't clean the paintwork at all (they put a very thin amount of paint on and we have accidentally 'cleaned' through on a couple of spots in the kitchen!!! So was thinking silk might give us a fighting chance - am off to spend more time in shops, particularly some with offers on!
