I have tried to install Mcafee again but it says it is sucessfully installed already.

You could post a Hijackthis log here first so we could see what's running on the computer, before we suggest making any other changes.

See if you are able to follow these steps to do it:

Looks like your PC still has some AOL junk left on it? If you can, try downloading Google Chrome or Firefox and using that as a temporary workaround?

I have downloaded firefox and that wont install properly either, also been on my new email account and tried to set it up so it receives emails from my previous address and I cant open anything settings etc, it keeps saying a pop up blocker is preventing this from opening try to disable pop up blocker, but it looks like pop up blocker is disabled.

  • you used to require a code to move from AOL. A Mac code I think it is. AOL are notoriously difficult to get off your computer. Try googling ways of getting shot of them. I waited until I needed a new laptop and then changed provider.
    Good luck.
  • This is the problem in your HJT log:
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,First Home Page = C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\welcome.html

Internet Explorer is looking for that file when you launch the browser but the file no longer exists because you have uninstalled AOL. Just tick and fix that entry in HJT.

I would TICK each of the following in bold, then select the FIX CHECKED box like this:
    23hslk3.png

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://search.aol.co.uk/web?isinit=true&query=%s
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,First Home Page = C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\welcome.html
    R3 - URLSearchHook: AOL Broadband Toolbar Search Class - {4a6e1b85-1193-4a2a-aab8-7417f275f18a} - C:\Program Files\AOL Broadband Toolbar\aolbbtb.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: agihelper.AGUtils - {0bc6e3fa-78ef-4886-842c-5a1258c4455a} - mscoree.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6638A9DE-0745-4292-8A2E-AE530E7B9B3F} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: AOL Broadband Toolbar Loader - {776a9d06-e178-4aa0-aee4-b4de3a64ad28} - C:\Program Files\AOL Broadband Toolbar\aolbbtb.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B164E929-A1B6-4A06-B104-2CD0E90A88FF} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: AOL Broadband Toolbar - {e6ed7f95-e571-4f81-8757-5eb11252703d} - C:\Program Files\AOL Broadband Toolbar\aolbbtb.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: Kiwee Toolbar - {1c99b848-84cb-4ce4-8cd8-ed5719484d9f} - mscoree.dll (file missing)
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &AOL Toolbar search - res://C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\toolbar.dll/SEARCH.HTML
    O23 - Service: AOL Connectivity Service (AOL ACS) - AOL LLC - C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\AOLAcsd.exe

That will get rid of some of the AOL components, as well as the missing 'Kiwee toolbar'.

Also these to get rid of the desktop components (e.g. the picture of the little girl?)
    O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - http://cdn.digitalcity.com/aoluk_pho...14112509990031
    O24 - Desktop Component 1: (no name) - http://cdn.digitalcity.com/aoluk/aol...repolltile.jpg

I would then uninstall McAfee as it's not very good, and quite slow. Afterwards use the removal tool:
    http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

A better alternative is something like Avast, Avira free, or MSE (just pick one):
    http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
    http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus

I forgot to mention, you can also TICK and FIX this in Hijackthis:
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

Then afterwards it might be an idea to to reset Internet Explorer to defaults:

If that machine is crawling, follow the speedup sticky after following the other advice, then post a fresh log and memory/commit charge figures.
