there was a silly alternator relay on some combo's cant remeber the years now, that could cause a non starter if it went. got to say who ever told you to disconnect a battery once started should never ever be allowed near a engine ever again.

there maybe some expensive damage done by doing what you were told, basically youve cause a massive surge to your combo's eleky system, i wouldnt be suprised if you open you engines relay box to find most if not all your fuses blown and relays blown, perhaps your ECU has taken a hit.

back to basics here, starting from. damaged battery, damaged alternator, relays, fuses, fuel cut off listen for the intank fuel pump to surge on when ignition on just incase thats took a flow of watts aswell. then the engines sensors crank, cam, deisel stop solenoid, ignotion coil.

no electric pump on these isuzu diesels unless it is a later common rail, hmmmm ignition coil????

    Any warning lights on?
I'd have said immobiliser at a guess.

Im gonna guess that the key came apart recently.
Happens alot on Vauxhalls. When the key comes apart, the chip falls out.
Take your key into a locksmith and ask him to read the chip. We dont charge for this , hopefully he wont.
If he cant read the chip, you need an autolocksmith to programme another chip into the system

We do at least one of these a week.

    Good Luck

Apart from not fitting the fact the op posted, how can you read the chip if you reckon it's fallen out?
  • Sounds like you need a new battery.

Same thing happened with my diesel- dash lights came on but when I turned the key engine would not start but was making a clicking noise. I dismissed it was the battery at the beginning because the headlights were working, electrics.

However, after some initial tests, a new battery was the required.

    Hope that helps.

Just read the question again and if the key came apart, it does fit the facts.
My point is if the locksmith cant read the chip he then know's that the chip has fallen out and that will be the cause of the problem.
It's a cheap, quick diagnosis which may eliminate a key/immobaliser problem.
    Good Luck

It had a flat battery, wouldn't start, so the op charged it and it started first time, then when the op disconnected the battery with the vehicle running, the van stopped, and wouldn't start again.

If the chip was missing, it wouldn't have started in the first place.

    google "alternator load dump"

op's not been back since though, so maybe he's got it started anyway.
  • update guys- took it to a diesel specialist to fix it

he put a refurbed ECU in it and charged me £300 along with a new battery

guess what?- it still isnt starting and he doesnt know whats wrong with it

  • Have you had the key checked yet ?
As said, It wont cost you a penny to have it checked.
