I thought someone may point this out to me! I am selfishly trying to hang on to my sky plus; I dont watch much TV due to full time shiftwork and 15 hrs study a week but what I do watch I watch religiously and have to sky plus it! (bradband/computer too slow to watch online) I also feel bad for OH having to loose sports channels becasue of me..... I guess we will discuss that one tonight

Review which channels you actualy watch, there are other recordable options on freeview/freesat. the current sky kit can go free as well.

is there VM in your area that could give an upgraded BB connction for less.

Its up to you how you prioritize

But looks like we have horse, pets, sky you can't keep adding must haves to the list.

How much is the car worth?

You need to do a proper SOA, based on your actual credit card and debti card bill http://www.makesenseofcards.com/soacalc.html

Even on the basic one above you are really going to struggle to pay the mortgage if you lose your salary.
And with your salary, youyr current debt is equivalent to a year's salary, which I find measn you can retrieve the situation but only if you par back to the bone.

Horse, pets, golf, Sky and costly mobiles are £500 a month and you just cannot afford them on your current income with such high debt levels.

I have Sky plus and it costs me £47 a month, which also includes broadband and the phone. So surely the sports channels cant cost you £28 a month? Or do they?

I would call sky and negotiate a better deal with them, if you cannot bear to get rid of it and for DH>
  • You are all right, and this is a major wake up call.

Phones are with Orange, I have another year to go on my contract. Not sure about OH

We will have to do somehthing about the sky and broadband, will have look at what we are paying for as it sounds like we are paying alot.

I am a memebr of freecycle already, although we are in between two big towns and our local one is dead! will make the effort to go on there more often.

Will def look into the grocery threads on here. We are quite good with cooking so I am sure there is a big saving there. What would be a realistic amount for two people to live on? obviously helps that I am off alcohol as I could do with a drink!

Car is worth about £2000 Just failed its MOT and I owe the mechanic £470 and it still needs brake pads and a service so technically its a piece of crap! its not the most economical but I driver sensibly and get over 30 mpg usually.

    What is a VM?

well done for the wake up, there's a lot of things you can cut down on just try to think about where that £500 gone, you may have to sit down with the other half, and be prepared if you haven't told the whole truth are you sure of his real financial situation.

i see this more and more debt with couples who have separate bank accounts one just gives the impression they are managing

rule number one 1 pot Pee in it.

Oh, We were with them few years ago, took me 10 months to get them to close my account after I gave them a months notice! I would not touch them with a barge pole. Freeview may be a better option for us

Would it help to have everything paid into and going out of one account? Am thinking that will be a nightmare to organise but I can see the benifits. Not sure how my current bank would like that though if my wages were not going in every month?

Do not open a shared account until you know what your respective credit ratings are. Otherwise one bad rating can affect both of you.

What is to stop you having one account for bills and both paying in immediately after your salary is paid into the existing accounts?

  • That is what we do; all joint expenses come out of one account and then our own account for our own loans, card, phones and stuff
