One option might be to sell the car and pay off the finance (this will cost you, probably won't sell it for as much as it cost and probably an early redemption fee). Then buy a car for say £5000. This might leave you with say £4000 extra cash that you can use to buy fuel for the next 3 years. 3 years of free fuel instead of £10 a day.

I think that's exactly what the OP tried to do as in "I contacted arnold clarke to swap the car. I had agreed to a vauxhall corsa which would reduce my payments by 25 pounds a month and was a 1.2 diesel" only to be told that "nobody would finance me".

Besides I think you've forgotten that the OP will have to settle the finance on the car that they've just bought, so there's no way that they're going to left with £9k to spend on another car, fuel, or whatever.

My Sister drives a qashqi, when she first got it she was really upset about the petrol usage, she was putting in an amount of petrol each day, she spoke to the dealer who told her that its no good putting in small amounts each day, the needle gauge doesnt move and it looks like you are running out and you put more in just to be on the safe side. You need to put at least half a tank in when it gets low, idealy fill it up but thats way to expensive all in one go. She put in £30 worth and found that lasted her all week, much better than the £10 a day she was putting in, maybe thats something you should try OP

Are you seriously suggesting that the quantity of fuel affects the mpg?

    That's not what was said.

I agree with the poster - my son only puts £5 or so petrol in his car at one go, and his petrol warning light is always flashing. If he put all those £5s in in one go he would probably find at the end of the week he still didn't have a flashing warning light.

    It's in the mind!

I get low/mid 20s for my car but i know and knew it was a drinker and when i bought it i was expecting to be at the petrol station more often than my last car.
If you can afford to pay 10k surely you can pay £70 pw it costs in fuel...
I really do not see what you can do as its like me taking back my car saying its a gas guzzler when the world knows it is.

You will do well to get out of this.
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

I can't believe you spent 10k on a car without checking the MPG, take it as a lesson learned

He didn't spend £10k on a car. He spent about £200ish a month, which is a different thing altogether.

She said she was putting in £10 per day, but when she put in £30, it lasted a week. Assuming the car is used for 5 days, that is a 40% improvement in mpg.

Incidentally, the lighter a car is the more efficient it will be. So, the less petrol in the tank the better if we're being picky.

I dont quite believe what I am reading here, are you saying your sisters car uses less fuel now when she puts £30 in than when she used to put a £10 in :rotfl:

I think they are saying it appears to use less. Most cars fuel light comes on very early. My Toyota's comes on when there's still 10-11 litres left in the tank! When I fill it up, it doesn't come on for weeks. If I just put £10 every time it came on, then it'd probably come on every other day.

Besides, it's bad for a car to be constantly running on the dregs.
