Gmail Filters?

I set up a filter to stop any emails coming through from an old contact who keeps sending out weird emails. I thought it would mean I wouldn't get any emails from that contact at all but I've noticed that all the messages appear in my trash folder instead. Is that normal, or have I set it up the wrong way? I don't want these messages at all. I haven't opened them but it looks like they contain weird links. Should I just tick the 'delete forever' box to keep removing them or is there another way I can stop receiving them?
