uPVC window - condensation between panes

Hello.

I have a uPVC window that is steaming up between the panes with water
gathering on the inside. I understand this means the seal is gone. I assume
that the part that 'tilt & turns' needs replaced in it's entirety? Would that
be correct? Or is it possible to prise out the section that has the double
glazed section and just replace that?

I've been looking online for "replacement" parts but I'm not finding what
I'm looking for as windows aren't something I know much about.

I'm in Glasgow. Does anyone have any local joiners etc they could recommend?
The guarantee on the current windows has long gone.

TIA

James H

you only have to replace the actual glazed unit - not the whole window, i got one from the guy at the bottom of crow road a few years ago, not sure where he got it from but was cheap enough there - the joiner i used is no longer in glasgow, but you might get one on gumtree, it's a fairly simple job

So, the frame section (the bit that has the handle on it) is retained and you just
replace the bit inside it that contains the panes?

aye, that's it, usually there is someway of removing part of the moulding in the frame to get at the glazing, but the joiner will tell you when he sees it

What the_r_sole says is right. The glazed unit is the cheap part of the window. Most of the cost is in the plastic profile and mechanisms and fitting the window in the hole. Removing a failed unit and replacing it is simple.

I would contact a glazier, they will get a new sealed unit for you, and fit it. Get a few quotes first. Measure the glass size as best you can and ring around. Choose 3 local firms from Yellow pages.

Glaziers will do loads of these every year, it is only the sealed glass unit that needs replaced. Once you choose a glazier, get them out to measure accurately.

Do you know the brand of window? If so you could contact them, but they would be more expensive than a glazier I reckon.

  • It is a South Wales thing too. We have them in the current house, and are simply waiting til the rest of the work gets done to get them fixed.

Have previously gone direct to the manufacturer...look in YP/Yell for 'double glazed units' and most will offer repair/replacement service. Most now offer 'de-misting' service too...

If they manufacture the units too they'll prob be able to suggest or put you in touch with a fitter. To replace the unit in the window is probably one of the simplest jobs...don't pay too much...!
  • You can actually get in someone to clean up and reseal the glazing unit. I had it done a long time ago but remember it being much cheaper than replacing a perfectly good piece of glass.

I've got the same problem on about 4 windows. I like that tip of your Craigsville and I'm going to try and find out about it. I'll post any results here.
