Rigid Kitchen from Screwfix

Hello, has anyone bought a rigid kitchen from Screwfixdirect? If so were they happy with it and did they think it was better value than from B&Q or another DIY store?

In the picture on the website it shows the door on do they come attached, would be fab if they did as I've three children so the quicker I could get it completed the better.

Thanks:rotfl:

  • Hi there,

I havent personally bought a rigid kitchen from screwfix however i know a fair bit about fitting kitchens. The cabinets come ready assembled but without doors fitted, this is because cabinets are common but the doors are individual choice.

Fitting the doors take 15 mins tops for each door. Predrilled holes and easly adjustable hinges.

I personally go to Howdens who supply exactly the same rigid units as you buy from MFI it just depends what discount you can get. Also Howdens do a free design service.

Well worth a try, you dont have to commit to but.

nope keyline ,deal with a new kitchen company ,kitchen was suppsoed to be £1000 but i got manager to buy it in at cost less 40%(£600)then it was sodl to me at cost(to keyline £600) +5%(my staff discount) so cost me £650 to buy,got builders i know(joiner) who come into my work to fit it for a fraction of usual price, and bought a new oven,5 ring range and hood from wickes(we own them also) for cost+ 10% so saved a shed load,my next project is a conservatory, will probbaly save £10,000 on prices i have been quoted by buying materials myself and getting buuilders from work to build/fit it

In my opinion, you should not fit the units with the doors attached.

I think it would take you far longer to do it that way. The units are heavy and awkward enough to fit without a door adding loads of weight and swinging around in your face all the time.

As Ian posts, fitting the doors is not a long job if everything is pre prepared. You should fit them last when you are satisfied with everything else.

You will probably find that adjusting the hinges to get the door right is the most time consuming bit if you have not done this before. You can always attach the doors and then take your time adjusting them to a perfect fit.

Get one done each time you have a few minutes to spare from 3 demanding kids.:D

Screwfix ridge and flatpack kitchens are the same. They are screwed (MFI flatpack style) and doweled rather than stapled like Howdens. Howdens are a little more ridge but you can not re-tighten them if they become lose through abuse. The accessories pack that comes with the Screwfix kitchens is very good containing almost everything you need. The screwfix doors do not have alignment marks in the back so takes some planing when installing the handles. I do not like the wall mounting bracket system on the screwfix cabinets but can see them helping DIYers.

You should install the doors last to stop them being damaged and so they can be aligned with all units in place. Some kitchens come with doors attached and they are always removed before putting the cupboards in place.

Having just been through the process of a new fitted kitchen; when I asked for quotes from kitchen fitters, several refused to fit B+Q kitchens. A case of you get what you paid for and you don't pay much. I can't comment on screwfix but Howdens was mentioned favourably by many but Yes I think it is only trade

We wanted a kitchen constructed from rigid units too. We ended up getting ours from National Kitchens and couldnt be happier. They glue and dowell the units as well as hang the doors and fit drawers etc. The fitter had no trouble at all fitting the units into place with the doors being attached; he said it was considerably quicker to fit like that. The doors and units were well protected too, not a single bit of damage even though everythiing comes alreay built.

I've no idea what Screwfix kitchens are like though, sorry ^^

Howdens are the trade arm of MFI I think. You do need an account but try using the yellow pages for kitchen fitters. Alot advertise to fit your own kitchen or supply and fit and they will often use Howdens for their supplies.
Howdens only use the better Schrieber carcases, not the Hygena ones which are flat packed. They use a mixture of Hygena/Schreiber doors styles. You can get a brochure from them and compare to MFI to see the same kitchens, then look at MFI showroom.. You don`t need an account to go in and get brochures and a price list -but bare in mind the price list is LIST price. MFI always have 50% + off and I think it is off this list price, so your supplier will be getting 60-80% off these list prices then adding a little on so you should get it cheaper than MFI plus get the better carcase with less installation time as well.

We have just had our plan done and are waiting for our price. A mate at work has a sister who works for Howdens so he has a `family` trade account:D and gets 75-90% off these list prices. He said to source the appliances elsewhere though for a better deal.

The best advice I have had is to make sure you get a good referenced fitter cos an expensive kitchen can look cheap and tacky if put in roughly and more importantly a cheaper one can look great.
