Don't want both barclaycards - platinum/gold

Hi
Can anyone help me!?
When I sign in to my Barclay's Bank online account,I notice I was 'pre selected' for a Barclaycard Platinum.
Because the APR and purchase rates are lower than my Gold card I decided,or i am thinking about, I would apply for the Platinum card.

I do not want to have both cards,so I contact Barclaycard via secure email, before applying,to explain this.

Today I received the following reply via email from Barclaycard:
"Please be informed that if you close your existing Barclaycard, you'll need to wait for 6 months before applying for a new card."

Is there anyway I can get around this?As I do not wish to have both cards.
Could I possible apply for the Platinum card and once I received it,then cacel my Gold card?

The balance on the Gold card is nil.I have never been late with any payments.

Any help or advice much appreciated.

AFAIK you cannot apply for a Barclaycard Platinum if you already have a Barclaycard.

    But I may be wrong.

All well and good, but you can't have two simultaneously.

OP would be best advised to call Barclaycard and ask about upgrading his Gold card :o

Fair point. Alternatively, he could just write 'Platinum' on his existing card. Hey presto - instant upgrade!

But if this is the case why have I been 'pre selected' by Barclay's to have the platinum card!!??Barclay's know I have the Gold card!

It's based on your Barclays current account conduct. They don't communicate with their credit card branch as comprehensively as other banks like LTSB and HSBC.

You could apply and pass the credit score but it would fail at underwriting due to the existing card and you'd get a letter stating you didn't meet the criteria.

    Usually.

I know of, I think, one freak example where a cardholder had two VISA cards from Barclaycard. But that's literally one freak example.

So basically I have 3 options:
    1.Stick with my Gold card.
2.Cancel Gold, wait for 6 months then apply for Platinum.
3.Close Gold account and go elsewhere.
Oh and a fourth options.......zx81.......just write 'Platinum' on my existing card. Hey presto - instant upgrade!
