Please help/car insurance

I cancelled direct debit on 29th July, because intended to set up direct debit on my new bank account. The payment for car insurance been taken on 27 July, next payment 27th August (that means plenty of time to give new bank details to car insurer). Few days ago I called to car insurer to let him know my bank details and been annouonced that my car insurance is cancelled from 12 of August. On my question' why i know nothing about that', thay told me they had sent letters. The only letter I ve got - yesterday- where is stated that my car insurance is cancelled.
Also I ve been told I will pay 50 cancellation fee + percentage of time left...etc (in total about 150).
Also, they told me they are quite happy to insure me again for the next 12 months.
Is it fair? Where can I make complain? I am just crying and feel absolutely powerless... I paid them 153 per month for old vw passat, and it looks they just make me full and making a lot of money from nothing... Please help..

You need to find out why your policy has been cancelled, then take it from there if you feel they have acted incorrectly.

(All seems very strange if they now are happy to have you back)
  • Explanation from Kwikfit: 'policy was cancelled because you cancelled direct debit'. 27th - they took payment, 29th - i cancelled direct debit and was going to give them new bank details to set it up, on 12th they cancelled insurance, on 18th i ve got a letter stated 'your car insurance was cancelled on 12 th August'.

Cancelling a policy because you cancelled your DD seems unfair. (Especially if as you say you hadn't missed a payment).

Check the policy to see if there are any conditions relating to cancelling a DD, then make a complaint regarding this and pursue it to the end of the line, then if still not satisfied refer to the FOS.
  • Will do, will post update later, thank you

It may be worth you trying to speak to a manager over this (as you currently are uninsured, and will need to get some insurance somewhere if you want to drive your car - most insurers won't quote you with this cancellation on your record) to see if this can be resolved quickly, and your policy reinstated.

Going down the complaints procedure/FOS is a drawn out affair!
  • I bought new insurance immediately after I learned this one been cancelled, and I m driving absolutely uninsured. To be honest after what happenned I will never ever deal with Kwikfit. They had put me onrisk of huge expenses, points of my licence without even me knowing about this. Now I want justice. I think I am not the first one in this situation. It looks like they do what they want.

    Do you mean this???

Presuming you mean you are "absolutely insured"?

Have you told your new insurer that your previous insurance was cancelled by the insurer? (You do need to declare this, otherwise you might as well be uninsured!)
  • I just bought new insurance online, I am waiting for documents by post now, and will send them no claims for the last 4 years. In the application online nobody asked if my insurance been cancelled or not. But I feel I have nothing to hide and happy to provide this information.

When making the online application you will have somewhere agreed certain criteria, this will include you agreeing something along the lines of "no-one to be covered on the policy has ever had an insurance policy cancelled or had special terms imposed".

You need to speak to your new insurer about this urgently as they will find out about your cancellation and could now void this policy too!
