Going way off topic... why is it allowed? I understand that couples can compliment each other well (I love cooking and the misses loves eating) but why should the state pay 2 people to live together? (I am aware that if they didnt that they would get the money seperately)All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

I'm sure you might get a reply along the lines of why shouldn't they? human rights etc etc etc

If my husband's depression was so bad that he was eligible for DLA and I was HIS carer, how does that stop him helping me with physical tasks that I cannot do (such as walking, climbing stairs etc) and being MY carer?
This is a hypothetical case.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
It doesnt stop you from caring for each other but surely all couples care for each other and do things for each other which the other is unable to do or not as good as.... why should therefore some couples receive government money for this and others just have to be thankful they no longer need to pay an electricians call out charge each time a fuse blows or a plug needs replacing? All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

That's not going off topic, that's undermining real problems that people have. If a couple did not do the caring for each other, the state would have to provide staff to come in and care for them and that would work out a lot more expensive to the tax payer. By your logic, why should the tax payer pay state child benefit when people elect to have children. It's because we have a social responsibility system where the vulnerable are assisted not left to rot.Integrity is a dying art!:p0 -
Forgive me for what i'm about to, say again i can only say again i mean no offence to anyone whatsoever!
Because "disabled" covers a huge amount of disabilities to me personally it seems a lot of people are trying to claim DLA, i appreciate that there is physical disability and mental disabilities but do SOME people not abuse this.
Lets be honest here a few years back did anyone ever get DLA for depression?Hit the snitch button!member #1 of the official warning clique.

Getting back to the OP!
DLA is not awarded on disagnosis but how the illness/disability effects your everyday life. I think you need to have been caref for for a min of 6 months and need it for at least a further 3.
For DLA you will need full backing by your GP and consultants.

The previous answer is good, but to put more simply they receive the money because they are DISABLED.0 -
Absolutely agree that there is an element who will try to blag any benefit they can and sadly a percentage of DLA receivers do not need or deserve such. This thread however is to address an eligibility question based on the assumption that the applicant is genuine. Glib remarks comparing cooking/eating to disability/care aren't helpful or sensitive.Integrity is a dying art!:p0

Also, if you are ill/disabled-Social Services may be able to help you if you are struggling looking after the kids-may be an idea if you and husband are so ill.
