web site help for orginisation

Looking a litte help.

Small orginisation I go to has a website www.orginisationname.com

this was created and administered by someone who has not left the orginisation and area. Before he left he told Orginisation members he had paid for another year for website and we could continue to use it.

Now issues are..........site is rubbish, basic and out of date poto's and info on it BUT noone can update anything as the guy who created it did not leave any username or password for site.

AND a few years ago the same guy also created a Facebook group for the Orginisation , which now has no administrators and although people can post of it again so info it out of date that only an administrator can change and there is not one !! I have trawled FB and seems only way to get group closed is to get all members to leave, need to look at this as some members may not even use FB anymore so not sure if thsi will work . Anyone know any other way ?

So we have a website that is out of date and a FB group that has out of date info on it and neither can be chaged. The guy who set up the website and FB left no details about passwords, softwear used for site , etc so basically we are stuck with it.

I am going to suggust today the Orginisation contact him and ask for information needed to update site and if not ask him to get site taken down so we can start a new one, can chage the .com to org this web address if still available.

Someone suggested just setting up the new site BUT I said no as when you do a search for the orginisation the top hit is the current site and if 2 show up for same place it will confuse people and look unprofessional.

Is ther anything else we can do if the guy refused to give details or take site down ??

thanks

Don't know about the FB group, but as for the website, you could get new hosting and change the nameservers for the domain name to point to it assuming you have access to where the name was registered.

That way you can build a new site and still have the same domain name.

name registered until march 2012, so I guess without co-operation from person who created it not a lot we can do until after that date . the domain is registered with tucows but says Registration Service Provider is 123-reg.co.uk

so is the 123.reg the host where site is hosted ?

123-reg could be just the registrar (they resell tucows for .coms)

When you do a whois check:

    * Who is the registered owner on the domain name
    * is an admin email shown
    * What does is show under the "Domain servers" section (this should be where it is hosted)
    * can you see what is under the Domain status section? Should look something like:

    Domain status: clientDeleteProhibited
    clientTransferProhibited
    clientUpdateProhibited

If you want to pm me the domain name I will take a quick look for you.

EDIT> Although I think the easiest thing is to just ask the guy who set it up. Unless there are underlying issues from when he left he should be able to provide the info.

My not-for-profit organisation use 123-reg. They can easily transfer a domain to other username if you can prove ownership - A friend is currently going through this process as his old web design company won't give it back. The other good thing about 123-reg is that DNS is free, so nameservers can easily be changed without paying extra and you can keep control rather than handing it over to web designers like my friend did.

We host our website with ' glamorgan dot coop '. Their hosting is carbon neutral and they promise charities to beat the price they currently pay for hosting by 10%. The good thing about this is their profit gets spent on community projects.

Sorry for sounding this but if the guy who set up the site will not give over the username and password and the person who runs this orginisation ( non profit ) would it be worth contacting anyone to ask to get site transferred or do we just need to wait until after march 2012 ?

and I am confused as to it the host 123-reg?

    thanks

I'm not 100% sure if what hes doing could be considered either cybersquatting or theft.
If it was done while he was part of the organisation, usually the work/domain etc would belong to the organisation.
If the organisation can lay a valid claim to the domain, it can be disputed through http://www.icann.org/en/dispute-resolution/ however this is a very costly process (£1500 if I remember correctly!) but mentioning the dispute process to him may spur him on to just hand over the domain etc.
Have you tried to contact FB? We managed to close another page recently which was opened in our organisations name.
Before any of that, just try asking him.

Heres the form to contact FB regarding infringement, again depending on the nature of your organisation, this might not be the best form to use. Facebook doesn't use email for contact, it must be done through a series of forms hidden within the help section.

  • If you own the domain and can prove it 123-reg are very helpful. There are a lot of rogue web designers who get unknowing customers to transfer the tag over to their domain provider which 123-reg do for free. I think if you have the certificate for the domain you just need to fax Nominet to change it back with the number and a letterhead with the same address as on the domain owner details. I would not recommend anyone buy their domain from a web designer. They should register it themselves with Domain Monster or 123-reg and then change the nameservers themselves to their hosts using the free DNS these both come with. Remember that you don't have to host your website with the same company that builds it.
  • I think you should just start again with www.orginisationname.org because .org is the right exstention for organisations.
also when people type your name into google your site will show at number one because the other domain name is dead.
Also Just set up a new FB fanpage and tell everyone on the old group page that you have moved
