A similar thing almost happened to me about 12 years ago. It was my first car purchase, not brand new but still an expensive purchase for me.
The day I saw the car I got a good deal on 0% finance and filled out all the paperwork based on 0% finance and paid the deposit. When I went to collect the car a couple of days later they presented me with some finance paperwork to sign, I quickly read it through and realised that there was a massive payment at the end of the agreement making the car a lot more expensive, so I said hang on a minute this isn't what was agreed.
The salesman gave me some waffle about how they'd tried for the 0% finance and I'd been turned down, so I asked for my deposit back. Funnily enough after several minutes of them trying to fob me off the 0% finance agreement came through for me. Even then they tried to put PPI on without me wanting it and this was quickly removed also.
I think the moral of the story is to check any paperwork before you sign, sadly I don't this practice is that uncommon after reading about it happening to more than one person.

    HP is finance.
  • I am thankful my parents didn't push me into any enormous financial burden except university at that age! What a nightmare for your child!

How have her parents pushed her into anything. She wanted the car and thought that she had negotiated a good deal. Which she hadn't and in which she either misunderstood the T&C's or didn't bother to read. Maybe they should have been a bit more proactive on her behalf, but it doesn't sound as if they pushed her into anything.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

£17k for a mini at just 21yrs of age? Holy Moly!!

Even without the balloon payment it's a horrific situation for a 21yr old to be in, what about Mortages/kids etc? There can't be any chance of those things now. I don't think I could have ever been proud of my littl'un committing so much money at such a young age for a tin can.

The good news though is that it is a HP Agreement so as soon as 50% of the finance has been paid, She can bail out of this mess and give the car back. That's the only way out now.

I don't think that's exactly fair, you don't know her situation. I myself am 23 and have just purchased a £17k car on finance. I wouldn't call it a 'horrific situation', I earn enough money to pay it off comfortably and don't plan on having kids in the near future.

I'm sorry unhapp I don't have any advice I can give you but I hope things work out ok for your daughter
  • i cant understand why people have given smart remarks even to the point of being nasty to op.

We all make posts based upon our experiences.

My oldest is 19 and there is simply no way on this earth I would stand back and let her commit £17k on a car.
I have owned enough cars to know how long that "new car" feel lasts, and it is much shorter then the repayment term.

There are a million things more worthwhile for youngsters to save for, children, houses, weddings, furniture....future!

At 21 I had sailed all around the World, these days, at 21 they have barely left home.

Wise Words - My Neighbour just brought a nearly new car - which he washes on a daily basis - I am watching to find out when the novelty wears out - I am very sure it will be shorter than the length of the finance of the car.
    I owe £3233 @ 0%
