I think you could start a whole new trend...
  • I know the feeling about slobbing around!! Ive only got dressed this morning because my shopping was being delivered!!

I have been up since 7.30 and playing in the garden with mutley (in my PJs) but mutley doesnt mind as he loves me unconditionally but not sure what the neighbours think but who cares!

Im finding it hard motivation wise as its the kids summer holidays and off school so all routine has gone out of the window. Yes im still going to work in the afternoons but I dont have the intense mad morning before school routine where I rush round like a mad woman.

I've got a question for all you homemakers:

What time do you get washed and dressed in the mornings? Being at home in the morning is still a massive novelty for me, but I'm already finding that slobbing round in my nightie until 10.30 doesn't make me feel good. It's nice not having to be washed, dressed and walking down the road to the bus stop at 7.30am, but I seem to be going to the other extreme.

Can get up anytime between 6.30 and 7.30, bright eyed and bushy tailed ready to crack on once OH has gone..... but if OH has a dental appt or other then it throws my schedule and body sync out of the window...... l
    ;) If in doubt, don't! :o
  • I'm definitely starting to embrace my inner homemaker. I'm quite minimalist in my wardrobe as well as my apartment and only have two pairs of cropped denim jeans I wear all the time in the summer, blue ones for non-teaching days, and black for teaching days. The black ones lost their button a couple of weeks ago, and although I always wear longer tops/short dresses with the jeans so it doesn't show, it's been really annoying me. Today I got out my recently decluttered and minimalised sewing box (now 15cm x 7cm x 5cm), found a suitable button and sewed it on.

To anyone who hasn't got mental health issues and is a good and organised housewife, that wouldn't seem like much. To me it's a miracle! Normally I'm too anxious and stressed about the bigger issues of work to deal with the little things that make life comfortable. And finding a suitable button, needle and thread in a massive, tangled sewing box? No chance.

I still haven't started marking the exam papers, but that's another story.... :-D

  • Hello everyone, I've just read through the whole thread and would like to join, if I may? :)

I'm approaching 30, married, no kids, and haven't worked since February this year as we emigrated and DH had a job lined up for when we arrived, leaving me to basically set up our new lives from scratch. It's been hard, but so worth it! At first, the plan was always that I'd get us set up, then maybe have a month 'off' and then get a job.

But now we're almost 6 months in, we both like the fact that we have a much better life with me not working. I do all the 'homemaker' things, with DH ''just'' going to work, so it leaves weekends and evening free for us both to do nice things instead of housework. In the UK, I did all the meal planning (which I'd never heard of until I found MSE!) and food shopping/budgeting and any general organising (DH has no motivation for any of this and could spend a fortune on nothing if it was left to him!!) so it's been much less stressful now not having to rush round tesco in my lunch hour/after work. Funnily enough, I get the weekly supermarket and market sopping done in an hour now, with no stress. Before I could be wandering round tesco for ages and still forget something.

My days are made up of: up and out the door by 9am or 10am (depending on gym class I fancy) cycle to gym and do 1 or 2 classes back to back, cycle home for lunch then a 'rest' in the sunshine with a book ;), then on with the housework. Sometimes though, I have a very long rest and wind up rushing at 4pm to get the washing up done and tea on the go before DH gets home!

I don't do any housework on a weekend (except laundry if the weather's good), so Mondays are spent catching up with the mountain of washing up and perhaps the hoovering or bathroom, Tuesday afternoon is food shopping, Wednesday afternoons I go to a local Craft Club where I'm the youngest by 32yrs.....and the eldest is 92! This is my social time as the gym isn't particularly social, I find. Thurs and Fri are flexible with either a trip into town, meeting a friend, crafting, more reading, baking or the rest of the housework. I do the cooking and washing up every day, of course, and also make up DH's lunch box for the following day.....which I should be doing now!

So between the gym and a bit of housework here and there, I find I'm really busy! At first I found it a bit of a novelty, but also felt quite jealous of DH having social interation at work. Now, though, I actually quite enjoy it. I've also found a local craft shop that holds craft evenings/classes so I've been going along to some of those too, to try and branch out and meet people, as being at home can be quite solitary, and I don't think that's very healthy all of the time. Another poster (sorry, can't remember who it was) mentioned being desperate for company and trailing about after DH when he got home and that made me laugh as I do that too sometimes!

The best bit by far for me is knowing that we're both less stressed and now actually have time for each other, and not having to pretend that cooking tea together is enough 'quality time'. If you asked DH, I think his favourite bit would be not having to do the hoovering :rotfl:

As it is, last week I put my CV in to a local recruitment agent with a view to working part time (2 days per week), as although we are doing ok moneywise, it would be better if we had more coming in (wouldn't it just?!) as we will need quite a pot for visiting family and we'd like a car (maybe, we're still umming and ahhing about a car, but it would make life easier).

So far, I haven't had much negative feedback from people for not working, in actual fact most people seem to be quite envious. Well, there's one girl at DH's work who keeps asking him if I'm getting a job yet.....but whatever - it's none of her business! (I suspect she's envious, too).

Phew, that's a long post......probably my longest ever, so sorry for rambling on! It's good to 'hear' of other people being at home too, and how they get on with routines and finding the motivation to do the boring stuff.

Right, off to make pizza and lunch box - it's a bit late here!
