  • Unfortunately, I am a victim recently.

Just wonderring, is there anyway to claim the money back if paid by credit card and haven't recieved the goods yet?

Really need to be careful with the way they play.

    1. In their web site, FAQ section the described below in large font to attract you to attend their auction.
"(6) What guarantees do i have? All manufactured goods come with manufacturers warranties. All Electrical goods are guaranteed for 12 months from the date of purchase. Jewellery; All jewellery comes fully authenticated with Antwerp Gemologist Institute (AGI) certificates. Paintings; All paintings sold are hand painted genuine works of art, with Art Identity cards where possible, together with artist’s biography and any research we are able to compile. Its always a good idea to research the artist or go to International Investment Paintings "
On the other hand, it clearly stated in their terms and conditions at the bottom of their homepage with very small light colour link.
"Coopers do not accept any responsibility for the authenticity, attribution, genuineness, origin, authorship, date, age, period, value, condition, size or quality of any lot."

    2. It also stated on their terms and conditions:
"Inspection- Each buyer by making a bid for a lot acknowledges that he/ she has satisfied themselves fully before bidding , by inspection or otherwise, as to all the conditions of sale, the physical condition of and description of the lot including but not restricted to whether the lot is damaged or has been repaired or restored."

However, they never provide lot details before hand. Many items have been displayed just minutes before selling. No one have chance to check the details of the goods they presented. Also I found your can't event connect to 3G in the auction room and you have no chance to check on the internet at that time.

Is this some kind of non-compliance with the trading standard?
  • Unless the bank can help you you have been conned. Surely all you said above rang some sort of warning bell?
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

If you've paid for something and not received then all the other terms are irrelevant. If it was over £100 your credit card company should be able to help. You don't say if you contacted the company or not, that would be my first calling.

Also report to Trading Standards they like to investigate alleged rogue auction companies.

Even if you fought, complained and pressured to get this one shut down there are endless other ones that are occurring. To be honest selling something very cheap by making out it is special and high value is done in many ways not just at a "auction".

Its up to the buyer to check they are getting a deal and not being carried away and paying over the odds for something made in china for 50p.

Quite. There are a few nasty mock auctions that go around every so often. Using scare tactics as well as the normal cons. There are still occasional stories of someone paying a few hundred for a laptop or a watch and finding they've got a wrapped up box with a brick in it. When they go back to complain a couple of heavies bounce them out the back door.
I can tell a mock auction with a second of entering a room, unfortunately if it's your first visit to an auction you wouldn't have a clue. TV programmes don't help much either, glamourising auctions as a quick way to buy and sell.
As far as mock auctions go, running one is quite a serious offence carrying a hefty jail sentence, so they are always worth reporting to Trading Standards who have powers to prosecute.

  • Me and a mate went to a similar type of auction many years ago. We spotted it was a fake pretty much straight away and it was obvious there were "plants" in the audience. At one point they handed out some personal CD players to people and said if you didn't want it they would take it back off you. When they came collecting, they forgot me so I kept hold of it. Never got asked for it back so I took it home without spending a penny.

Yes, and it still was working when I flogged it at a car boot a couple of years ago :D
