Help - Insurance expert ourt there ?

I have obtained a quote for annual travel insurance over the phone, my husband has a pre exisitng medical condition. The person asked numerous questions to which he had to answer yes or no, on one particular question he asked for clarification/advice to which they replied I cannot help answer Yes or No ! !

My husband was referred to a Specialist who he saw about 4 months ago and had a scan and was put on a drug to see if it improved his condition. He then saw him again 3 months later and the specialist said his condition had improved. He is seeing him again in 3 months

The question was :

Q: Are you awaiting investigations or specialist referral? to which he responded No

I want to know if the response he gave is correct ?

I don't want to be in a position if God forbid something happens and the claim is rejected because of the response to the question

Is there an insurance "expert" out there

Many thanks

Unfortunately it is hard to help you on this one. If you've answered in good faith I would imagine there won't be issues but obviously can't guarantee this. While the Sales person on the phone may well have seemed unhelpful, they are bound by FSA regulations. Most insurance companies offer "non-advisory" sales, meaning they can't give you advice on arranging the contract and how to answer questions. The reason for this is that a higher level of expert knowledge is required.

One thing you can do to help ensure it is all in order is to use a broker, I imagine this may cost more though owing to the extra service provided. I'm reluctant to give my interpretation I'm afraid as I'm worried I may give the wrong interpretation and leaving you in the proverbial. What I would say is ask yourself whether your husband is awaiting investigation or referral, or is this a more standard check up, if the latter fine. If the former, ring up the insurer asap.
  • Hi Spiderham

Thanks for your quick response. To explain a bit further the condition my husband has Proteinuria has been declared and accepted on the quote. So they know what the condition is, I was just a bit confused with that question because because he is not awaiting referral to a specislist as he is already a patient of the specialist since April

He was covered for the same condition on last years policy, but WAS referred to a Specialist who he first saw in April, so at this stage he is taking medication which has improved the protein levels.

Many many years ago I was a medical claims assessor for BUPA, so I always want to ensure that everything is spot on.

I will try and speak to a non sales person tomorrow, if that is possible !

    Regards

    That may well help.

Ask them to note on their file that you have told them what you have and at least then you've disclosed all. That would probably help a great deal if there was any question somewhere down the line. If there was an issue they'd be weak before the FOS and it is almost always cheaper for them to sort things early than drag it out to this point if the outcome is the same.
