Claiming compensation? without a solicitor?

Hi All,
I had a motorcycle accident a couple of weeks ago where a van pulled out on me & I ended up in the side of it! He's admitted liability and so far his insurers have been pro-active in dealing with my claim for damage to my motorbike (although it looks as though it's going to be a financial write-off!)
However, the accident left me with a broken wrist, & has pretty much ruined my plans for what's left of the summer! (Can't play guitar/piano, can't go cycling, obviously can't ride my motorbike even if it wasn't written off, missed out on Go karting at a friend's stag do - etc!)
I don't know:
a) whether I can claim or not. It's not costing me anything financially - but it's a real pain not being able to do anything! and
b) if I do claim, can I / should I do it without using a solicitor? There are lots of 'no win- no fee' places, but obviously a "no-win no-fee" implies "win - fee"
Any thoughts? Part of me thinks that I don't want to be part of the 'compensation' culture, but then part of me thinks that my insurance will go up next year for declaring a non-fault claim ... as well as having a useless arm for a while!
All responses much appreciated. Thanks.:)
