Just bought a dell 5030 laptop and need to shift all my pc stuff over
It's XP to Windows 7. What's the best way to do it?
I want my pictures, antivirus, passwords and programs etc. :rotfl:
Any advice please? Nice and simple for a nearly silver surfer

There's a utility for it:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=4503
If you have trouble at any step, let us know.
Edit:
The Easy Transfer utility will copy all your photos, emails, and all your program settings over to the new computer.
Afterwards it'll tell you exactly what programs you'll need to install on the new one, and when you do all your settings should work as they did on the old one.
You'll have to install your antivirus again as mentioned elsewhere in the thread.0 -
You can do a simple upgrade, which Windows 7 setup will advise, which will keep all your files and settings, however, its always best to back up everything seperately and do a fresh install by formatting your disk with XP and doing a fresh install.0

antivirus and programs - you will have to install them again or use a free alternative eg

http://www.openoffice.org/
pics, usb key/cd/dvd if you have them - the latter 2 would also be useful as a backup
passwords, type them in again.!!

You will have to re-install your programs on your new computer as you cannot transfer them across (almost true, you can copy them but the messing about to get them to work is just not worth the effort).
For the rest of it, Microsoft has a program to do it: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=45030
