Problem with Microsoft Security Essentials

Hi,
I have a desktop computer and a netbook which both use Microsoft Security Essentials. It is regularly updated. Just recently I am experience some problems with the antivirus software.
Everytime I use the computers, the green MSE icon goes to amber, saying that I haven't run a scan for a while. I run a full scan and then it goes back to green. When I next use the computers again in a few hours time, the same thing happens and it changes to amber again. This has been happening for the last few days.
Is anyone else using MSE experiencing the same problem?

  • Hey,

Is it asking after you've turned the computer off it says it again, or just with general use? Also, have you noticed the time on your computer resetting itself incorrectly?

If i turn the computer/netbook off and switch back on again, it'll tell me that I haven't run a scan on the systems in a while, even though i did it when it was previously turned on. The results of the scans comes up with no problem.
Do you mean the date and time on the computers? Yes, all the date and time settings are correct.

    Hey again,

Hmm, that is very strange. If it's when you turn the computer off then I would assume it's what's called the 'CMOS Battery' - a little battery in the computer which keeps the data and time settings correct even when the computer is off... But as you're saying the settings are correct, this can't be it.

All I can suggest is that you uninstall and then reinstall it. Hopefully someone else can make a suggestion though. :)

If you are also using CCleaner there is a currently a known problem between MSE and CCleaner because, following the release of an updated version, the latter deletes the logs/registry keys which MSE uses to determine its true status.

If you search Google you will come across several links describing the problem such as:
    http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=33504

I had this problem several weeks ago and, until either MSE and/or CCleaber co-ordinates a proper solution, it is simply solved by unticking MS AntiMalware in the Applications section of CCleaner.

    I hope this helps.

Actually I use CCleaner on both machines. I will do what you suggest and see what happens. Thanks

Not directly linked to your problem but a MS update has also broken some cookie cleaning programs. If this is a problem uninstall KB2559049, you may have to make programs and features show updates to see this.

Then you will have to set windows updates to inform you of updates rather than auto install, as this update will want to be re-installed, so you can then ignore it until either MS fixes the problem, or the cookie program you use has an update.

Thanks to all that responded. It looks like it was a problem between MSE and CCleaner. I've unticked the MS AntiMalware in the Applications section of CCleaner as suggested and it seems to have sorted the problem out now. :)

Are there any downsides to doing this please?
I keep my ccleaner up to date as I do Malwarebytes and haven't seen any clash? Both have been run today.
    Thanks.
