Advice Needed

Hi :)

I am hoping someone can help me. Yesterday I got this e-mail:

'Message From eBay Member

Dear seller,,

I have paid for that item. when it will be shipped ????

You can view the item clicking the link below. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/ebayISAPI.dll?(edited)[/url]

Thank you,
(user name was here but I have deleted it for now)

I was a bit suspicious as I don't have anything outstanding to post so instead of going through the link, I entered the auction number onto e-bay's search page and it wasn't found.

So I sent the e-mail to spoof@ebay.co.uk and today I received this reply:

Hello,

Thank you for writing to eBay regarding the email you received.

The email you received is likely to be an unsolicited, or 'spam' email.
It does not appear to be a spoof email.

So are they saying it is a genuine e-mail as they say it isn't a spoof? And yet the ebay user and the auction number doesn't exist so surely it must be a fake?

Look forward to hearing your comments on it.

Best wishes

Probably best to edit the link on your post incase people click on it.

bigkisses, I can't get that link to work?? It might be just my browser tho??

Whats the gen then? Sounds to me like someone was trying to promote their product by emailing people and getting them to look at the auction...?? Looks like ebay has pulled it now though?

It could be, people do come up with some pretty clever ways of promoting rubbish.

Back before Xmas, I was on a message board, and someone hacked the website and added some javascript that automatically redirected people to his auction. And he even had a message in the item that he wouldn't restore the messageboard to normal until he sold 20+ items
    Titch :)

You might need to be logged into or registered with, Ebay forums for the link to work. Here were a couple of messages people wrote about it if you can't get he link to work..
Sorry if this one has been mentioned before ... no harm in repeating it ..
Just had an email... "question from member".. all the ebay logo's and bumph...my email address ...with the message " i have paid for that item when will it be shipped ? "... with a view item link under it .... I KNOW... I KNOW... don't click links ... but on my other id I sell a lot... giving good honest FAST SERVICE.. over 3000 positives 100%... so in haste i clicked the link ... the page wouldnt load ... alarm bells started ringing in my mind so I checked the id .... no such member ... I checked the item number given in the url ... no such item... so I changed my password straight away.... the id was markdonne9988 .... item number 2479142754
I am usually pretty good with these but this one was an excellent spoof ..... SO BE ON YOUR GUARD !
seems to be a mass email spoof then... this one really is an excellent spoof ... very clever... I won't trust ANY "ask the seller questions" any more
Yes ... THIS ONE IS A GOOD ONE !!... It caught me out completely yesterday ... and I am always pretty good at recognising these !
Just out of precaution, straight after I clicked on it ... I changed ALL my passwords ... I then run ad-aware and spybot ... both came up with NOW'T .... but I then remember an excellent programme recomended by cuddly-hippo... it was xcleaner.... it found something so I deleted it straight away... don't know if I got it from clicking on the link in the email ?....SO PLEASE BE ON YOUR GUARD ON THIS ONE !!

The general consensus seems to be that it is some kind of spoof and not to click on the link.Which is why I said it's probably best for the OP to edit the link in the first post so nobody can click on it.They(the Ebay users not Ebay staff) seem to be advising to change all passwords if you do click on it and to run ad aware. Not sure how necessary all that is.Hopefully somebody a bit more techy can enlighten us.From the reaction of those people on EBays' forums I think they think it was something more sinister than somebody just attempting to promote their own item.

Thanks for your replys. I have been on e-bay forum this morning and I certainly am not alone! I got another one this morning frmo a different e-bay address but witht he same user id. I didn't click on the link (have edited the link on here as suggested) so am not too worried about anything but just annoyed that someone has my e-bay details.
