It should go off itself - I would start with the cheaper part and work my way up - starting with the cat sensor.

  • Like one of the other posters said, your car has gone into limp home mode. You need to have the fault codes read, if you buy a code reader off ebay, make sure it reads EOBD which is for European cars and not OBDII which is more American based. That is your best bet though, they are only about £30 and you'll have it for good and will be able to use it on any Euro car made after 2001. But failing that, any garage will have a code reader for this car.

PS the resetting of the light can only be done with a code reader, the procedure one of the other posters mentioned is only for the service interval light and not the engine management light.

Well it went to VX for the tech II reading today and i nearly cried, they did a visual check on it for me aswell and the total bill is standing at £433.90 + VAT + Labour so will be about £650+.

Just for those who tried to diagnose for me, firstly thankyou for your assistance but the reason for the engine management light and crappy performance is the EGR Valve is knackered apparently and the ECU needs re-programming?

Cheers for all the help, and Kitchpoo your a star the guy you recomended was superb.

Glad you got it partly sorted, I personally would seek non main dealer for the items other than the EGR as they are easily sorted by most (wheel bearings, brakes, discs and tyres). If the bill is over £300 and you want the dealer to carry out the work - ask the dealer what discount they give for members of Vauxhall sports Car Club - if it is 10% it is worth joining as it will save you some pennies. (likewise if it is £600 then if they give you 5% discount for membership it will still be a saving)

been looking at the trusty astrasport.co.uk and theres a guide on there re the egr valve so going to take it out later and clean it as a temporary measure and then when i get the new one fit it myself as the other bits, but things like the brakes, the bearings etc im going to pick up myself as alot cheaper than VX then take it to a local garage to fit as VX is £70 per hour!!
  • They are selling Vauxhall EGR valves on eBay, brand new for £45 inc postage, gives a list of engines it will fit. Search for Vauxhall EGR. Can I ask why the garage have charged so much upto now and the problem isn't sorted yet?

Firstly the EGR valve is £10 through Ebay, and they havent actually charged me thats what VX want to repair ALL the problems, but i can do 90% of them myself.

Nice one, if you can get one for a tenner then snap it up, not worth the hassle of cleaning the old one.
