Ditch BT completely and still keep broadband?

Hello all, just wondering if anybody can tell me if I get rid of my BT landline completely i.e. stop paying the line rental (after my current 12 month lock-in of course!), could I still use my Plusnet broadband given that it requires a BT line to operate it? If this question isn't clear let me know and I'll try to clarify further.

Cheers
T

  • The answer is no. You have to pay to rent the physical line (even if you have no intention uf using it for calls)

You can have broadband without a phone line from e.g. cable and 3G but ADSL (what you have) requires a phone line.
  • You could transfer your phone line to the Post Office, they have only a rolling, 30 day contract.

It might give you some time to think about the next option or explore broadband dongles or whatever.
    ''apply within'' :)

Without an active landline, how do you expect the broadband signals to be transmitted? The cost of providing and maintaining the local loop has to be covered-that's what you pay line rental for.
Mods, perhaps this should be the subject of a sticky, since it seems to come up at least once a week now?

Will the post office let you use plusnet for your broadband.

Plusnet dont have a minimum term either for phone service (unless its a completely new line). So the op could park his service there if he wanted to .

PlusNet line rental is only £11.99 a month as opposed to the Post Office £12.25 a month.

If cable is not an option in your area, have a look at fixed wireless broadband providers. There is one provider in my area (Kent) that provides 10Mbps, with tests at 24Mbps being conducted now. This cost £25 pm, so not dead cheap but good value if you need a good speed. You can also run a geographical number via VOIP over the service.

As things stand at the moment though, you can only use them as the ISP. No chance to engage Plusnet or anyone else.

I don't think they place any restrictions on who your bb provider can be.

PO line is BT based, not LLU, so you can use whichever ISP you wish.

  • I have discussed the same question with Plusnet directly this week. You can't take broadband without a phone contract. The only stand alone product is cable.
  • To clarify further you don't have to take the plusnet phone option. You can take your phone with any provider. Have you looked at paying your line rental in advance? you can save money this way.
