Hi question regarding moses baskets, just got our newborn home yesterday and she is not taking to the moses basket in really, we only have 1 mattress in it and it feels a bit thin to me but the girl in the shop reckoned it was the one to get?
Any suggestions?

My daughter's moses basket had a really thin mattress too, so I don't think the mattress is the issue.
Do you have anything else in the basket with her? We were advised by the midwife and health visitor to roll up two hand towels and put them either side of the baby in the basket. Just because they're used to being cocooned in the womb and once they're out it takes some adjusting to as there's so much space around them.
I'd recommend you try rolling up the handtowels and sandwiching the baby between them. It seems to give the baby a bit more security. Good luck.0 -
Just to reassure you all moses baskets nowadays are really thin in comparison to cot mattresses but she will be fine
Congratulations on your new arrival0 -
May I recommend a sheepskin fleece? They're cool in the summer and warm in the winter, are antibacterial and self- cleaning, though also machine washable, and made a huge difference with both of mine and a friend's baby who just would not lie down! (I bought two! Bought them for £35 and sold them for about £15)They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.0

Congratulations!
Most likely nothing to do with the mattress (unless you've given birth to the princess and the pea). Mine wouldn't sleep in her moses basket for at least the first six weeks. They've known nothing but the womb; warm, secure, soft heart beating. You can try things such as heating it with a hot water bottle before you put baby down, putting in a t-shirt you've worn for a familiar smell, or playing some white noise. But all of these are just tricks that they may see thru. Really its cos they just want to be close to mum ALL THE TIME.We Made-it-3 on 28/01/11 with birth of our gorgeous DD.0 -
have you tried swaddling her? wrapping her up tight? it was the only way my 2 would ever sleep but it when they were swaddled they slept fantastically!
my neice hated her crib and only slept in the moses basket but i think it was to do witht he fact the crib swung and she is to this day (3 years later) TERRIFIED of anything that moves. people included!Countdown to Discharge Is On!

Lots of babies won't sleep in a basket at first, mine included! If you're breastfeeding, get dad to put the baby in the basket to sleep, after maybe 5-10 mins of carrying her and soothing her. She may well settle down better for him as she will not associate him with food. You can then nip off for a well-earned cup of tea/kip on the sofa/bath etc etc.
She will get better.....honestly!!
Oh, and Congratulations"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0 -
Our little man only slept in his moses basket a few times - mainly during the day but the only way we could get him to sleep in it was to heat it for a few minutes beforehand with a heat pad. One night we tried him in his cot and that was it slept fine! Think he just wanted the space and to be able to see out.Silence is golden...unless you have a toddler. In that case silence is very, very suspicious!0
