Ebico-ppm 90p to fry an egg

Options
anyone help, my meter seems bonkers, over the past few weeks the charges have rocketed so much I put water on only to wash then switch everything off. I have a gas cooker that is not leaking and I have monitered how much I put on card and keep a record of units used for past year now. I check the money left on meter each morning and for the past two days after I topped up meter it has used 90p yesterday to cook an egg in frying pan, I used cold water to wash. The day before it cost me £2.10 to use the oven for 16 minutes and five minutes of hot water. this can't be right. I can't afford this anymore and at this rate I won't be able to heat any rooms in winter. Please someone advise on what I can do about this as surely its not that expensive for gas yet, it dosen't go up until september.

You need to scroll through the display on the meter as this will tell you all the charges as well as your consumption. Also when post about energy always include units rather than £s or in addition to £s as units are easier to compare because of prices/discounts etc.

Ebico gas price is 4.011p per kWh (price before increase)
90p divide by 4.011p = 22.438 kWh used to fry an egg ?

okay using the meter numbers tuesday there was £2.91 and the reading was 6479 (35 in red numbers) and today there is 22p left and the reading is 6479 (45) does this seem right
  • this doesnt seem right, if the meter reading has only advanced a fraction of a unit (note 1 unit does not equal 1 KWH) then im thinking you might be paying debt back through the meter.

you need to give us ALL the settings on your meter.

card out let meter reset to main display screen

press red button and tell us what it says £ credit for gas, what it says on £ owed and the read again.

next press and hold the red button till the meter beeps, then take your finger off the button. in the bottom left corner there will be a screen number. note this screen number down and then note the information that is on that screen, press the red button once (just press and let go) and it will go to another screen note it down and continue doing that till you get asked to put your gas card in, then keep pressing and noting whats on screen until it goes back to the first screen that came up.

give us all that information and someone will hopefully help you decipher whats going on with your meter.
  • right I have done that and have just had a gas man around to check annual heater etc and he said there was no gas leaks anywhere. So the results I get:

    £0.22 for gas
    £0.00 owed
    £5 on card 00
    £0.00 accepted for debt 01
    £2.91 accepted for e/cr 02
    £2.09 acceted for gas 03
    15:35 04
    0.000 05-09
    4.011 10
    0.00 11-15
    40.200 16
    0.00 17-19
    91 20
    £2.00 21
    £5.00 22
    30 23
    insert card 24
  • you should also gets screens 25, 26, 27, and a couple more once you put your gas card in when it asks for it on screen 24. screens 24 - 27 basically tell us if there is debt being paid back through the meter and at what rate and also what percentage of your top ups are being taken for arrears.

from the info you gave below you have

22p for gas, you owe nothing in standing charge, you last topped up £5 and of that top up £2.91 was taken to repay emergency credit, and £2.09 was given to you for your gas usage.

screen 10 is your KWH rate
screen 16 is calorific value (ignore this its fine)
screen 23 shows 30 which means if you have arrears on your meter then the meter would give you a minimum of 30% of your top up to pay back. i.e, if you owed £7 emergency and only topped up £5, the meter would take £3.50 to pay it back giving you £1.50 for your gas, leaving £3.50 emergency to pay before you could access the emc again.

im not sure what screens 20, 21 and 22 mean as i dont recall what they mean off the top of my head but someone else may know.

I gather that the meter reading was -£2.91 (only guessing as that's what the repayment was for the emergency credit) You topped up £5 and now you have 22p. Is that right? Yet you claim to have only used 0.1 of either a cubic metre or a a tenth of a hundred cubic foot. That's only about 3.2kWh or 1.1kWh. That isn't much. That doesn't seem right unless you really used next to no gas for heating, hot water or cooking. Are you sure? As you topped up £5 you had to repay the emergency credit of £2.91 leaving you with £2.09 for gas. You now have 22p left so have repaid 63p towards the outstanding debt (which appears to be repaid at a rate of £3 a week) and used gas costing £1.24. Which makes more sense as that's about 31kWh over 3 days which is enough for hot water and cooking. Or it's taken more for debt and less for usage. Something like that anyway. You need to top up £3 a week just to stay in credit. Plus whatever you use. As it's summer I'd be putting as much as you possibly can on it, in winter you'll be topping up at least £20 to £30 a week just to keep warm so try and get the credit up now so it isn't a shock to the budget. I'd be aiming for £20 a week now so that when a £30 a week freezing cold week is needed you have the credit already.

made a mistake, put £5 on card on tuesday morning, the meter reading was 6479(35), it took £2.91 off for emergency credit and left me with £2.09 for gas. Tuesday evening had oven on for 20 minutes to cook garlic bread and fish fingers and hot water on for ten minutes for wash/spruce up. Wednesday morning the gas left was £1.10, no hot water was put on that day the only gas used was for cooking an egg in the evening which took approximately 4 minutes used cold water for washing. Thursday morning check gas again and £0.22 left for gas and meter reading 6479(45). I pay a debt back of £3 a week on a wednesday when I top up the card. Looking back on the rest of the meter readings I have it seems I am paying too much because if the numbers in red are not the Kwh but part units. I have been looking at the meter almost obsessively lately as it is summer and I only use hot water for washing/bathing then switch off or for the oven. It has been costing 70-90p a day which I think is a bit much. I can't afford £30 a week for gas and last winter spent around £12 a week
after the £3 was taken. This year I have struggled to afford the £3 a week and often over the summer have only had around £4 a week over for the gas but it seems to be using it up faster than it was in april/may when I tended to have the heating on in the evening. Does it cost to have the meter checked to see if it is faulty? it was last fixed/changed 15/09/1999.

I checked the meter readings from 1/12/2010 the reading was 6313(03)
today 18/8/2011 reading 6479(45) so I have used 166 Kwh since december? is this correct?
I have paid out £326 on top ups £114 for debt at £3 a week.
