Not sure if this is a new one or not but first i have seen of it, From HMRC, I got an scam email from taxrefund@payments.hmrc.gov.uk (which looks pretty convincing as it has the .gov.uk at the end) saying:

After The last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined that You are eligible to receive a tax refund of 103.45

Please submit the tax refunds request and allow us 3-6 days in order to process it .

A refund can be delayed for a variety of reasons.

For example submitting invalid records or applying after the deadline

To access the form for your tax refund , Click here

Best regards
HM Revenue & Customs

I removed the link at the end for the page, which again was quite good with .gov.uk in the hyperlink

HM Revenue & Customs will never send notifications of a tax rebate by email, or ask you to disclose personal or payment information by email.

Just so you know, the underlying link still remains - all you've changed is the name of it :)

From the working link, it takes you to a form to give away your full details including NIN, bank account and/or credit cards (depending on how generous you're feeling).

Friends have been getting this type of scam for years.

Read the appropriate HMRC web page...

These phishing scams have been going on for several years.

But sometimes it's good to be reminded about them.I tend to be very forgetful, no major mistakes yet thank goodness. I'm always glad to get news of new (to me )scams

  • I get at least two a day - never even bothered opening them, HMRC does not seem to communicate by email.

Since nobody seems to read my lovingly-crafted links, perhaps I should do a pull-quote:

HM Revenue & Customs will never send notifications of a tax rebate by email, or ask you to disclose personal or payment information by email. Do not visit the website contained within the email or disclose any personal or payment information.
