Handles/mortice knobs for new door

I've just had a front door fitted, but the handle sticks out about 75mm from the door, which prevents it opening fully and will soon damage the plasterwork. The extension on this handle also presents another door on the downstairs toilet from fully opening.

My previous door had a mortice knob which probably stuck out about half of this distance. How easy is it to find one with these dimensions, presumably they fit on a square shaft. Is it universal?

Even the previous door didn't open very wide since I couldn't get furniture in and out, so I think I need to do something.

Firm who fitted it wan't immediate payment and insist there is no alternative. The handle and backplate is one fixed assembly, possibly a push in fit. However, it all slides off the spindle which appears to be a 5/16th inch square peg.

Not sure what to do about this. I may see a locksmith or hardware store tomorrow to get a second opinion. I was hoping there were some handles with a 'flexible' backplate you could drill out to size yourself.
