We're hoping our 60 stumps will rot down before we get to that part of the garden to plant.
Digging out that many of considerable size by hand is NOT an option but we might consider getting a digger in to remove some to plant replacement deciduous trees in the mean time!

If you know anyone with a 4x4 you could try putting a chain around the stumps and pulling out.0

that would be us....and we've tried! we've had three out with a digger, and that was hard enough work. They are far too big to risk damage to the cars, and the defender we tried with last year is off the road. Might try again next year when they've had 24 months to rot a little:o

The easiest way that i have found is to push them over with a bottle jack.
Dig a hole one side, put a good lump of 4 x 2 against the side of the hole to act as a base for the jack and then just push them over and out.
The taller the stump the easier it is.
You will be suprised how well it works.0 -

Hire a BobCat with the appropriate attachment? Loads of vids on YouTube of peeps using stump grinders!0 -
That's what we did. Leaving enough stump so that you have some leverage made it much easier.
You might find people on Freecycle/Freegle would be happy to take the wood away, even if it is from conifers.
We used freecycle to get rid of the stumps. In fact, we had 5 offers to take away stumps for firewood.0
