New washing machine...

Help!

We need to purchase a new washing machine. This is something we have never done before so do we have to hire a plumber to fit it? Do any of the larger electrical stores plumb washers in for their customers and take the old one away?

Many thanks for your help!

If they do they will probably charge for it!

My last one was fitted and the old one disposed of by the same firm - sadly an old family firm no longer trading.....

Ask when you look - my late f-i-l was adept at getting the cost of things like this reduced.... so haggle if you can!

If you are replacing an old one plumbing should not be needed. Simply disconnect the old and connect the new one. Dont forget to turn off water and electricity while you do it.
Getting rid of the old one can be a problem though.

As above go to a local independent and they will probably sort it for you. no actual plumbing required just a change over of the water feed and waste feed.
If your old one was very old it may have hot and cold filling but your new one will only have cold fill so makes ure the old hot water feed is properly capped off

I recently bought a washing machine from COOP and they offered a connection service and would dispose of old appliances but each of those options were chargeable - £15 for connection, £10 for disposal.

Most of the online shops offer to recycle your old washer and install the new one. I see that with some more expensive models this is trown in for free. Something like a tenner to dispose and another twenty bob for connection.

  • If round here's anything to go by - just put your old washing machine on the drive/grass verge and the scrap metal merchants will take it before you get back into the house!
    Normal people worry me.
  • I got one last year from Dixons - and was surprised that they happened to offer the best price when taking the add-ons into account, partly because they didn't charge to take away, only to plumb in. Basically, look around and compare prices including delivery, taking away and connection.
You could get your own plumber in if you don't feel confident enough to do it yourself, but the likelihood is that you would normally have to pay more.

You will find that the companies that say they will plumb in a new washing machine mean that they will connect the machine if the electrical, water and drainage supplies are already in place. They will not plumb the machine if it requires any actual supplies to be installed. For that, you would need a plumber or the ability to DIY it.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
