buy duty free in uk?

Hi, I'm travelling to Majorca tomorrow and have been told that tobacco cost £4.50 a pouch in Cardiff airport and £6.50 in Majorca. I want to get a good stock to I'll save myself a small fortune, i paid over £14.00 in Asda the other day!

can i take it out to Majorca in my hand luggage and bring it back to the UK, or, will i be stopped in Majorca?

i've never bought duty free before and I'm a bit worried in case i get it taken off me.

thanks for any help :)

you can only buy 'duty free' @ an UK airport if you are flying outside the European Union. (you have to show the relevant boarding pass)

Isn't Majorca classed as being under 'Spain' ???

    Departing Duty Free Allowances
You can take advantage of tax and duty free shopping if you are travelling to the following NON EU countries:
    • Africa
    • Algeria
    • Asia
    • Australasia
    • Canada
    • Canary Islands (Tenerife, Lanzarote, Las Palmas, Fuerteventura)
    • Channel Islands
    • Gibraltar
    • Morocco
    • North America
    • Norway
    • South America
    • Switzerland
    • The Far East
    • Tunisia
    • Turkey (Istanbul, Dalaman, Bodrum, Antalya, Izmir)

We are not restricted as to the amount of products we sell, but passengers are advised to consult the duty free allowance charts situated in the duty free shop. These charts list limits for all non EU destinations.

We have just returned from Ibiza and my hubby bought a pack of 50g Golden Virginia (cant remember how many pouches where in there tho!!) for 60 euros and I bought 200 marlboro for 40 euros - both cheaper than at the airport anyway.

Thanks for all the response, i wont chance it at Cardiff airport then, I'll get over in Majorca.
  • It might be worth asking if Cardiff offer a "collect on return" system like some other airports.

You pay for the goods before you depart and then collect them when you land back in Cardiff.

but this would still be at the duty paid prices rather than duty free (duty paid is the same as in the shops here)
  • You cannot buy tobacco products when leaving a UK airport for another EU country, goods bought returning from Spain are tax-paid goods... tobacco tax is lower in Spain, this is why they are cheaper than the UK. Real duty free goods are only sold to those going anywhere outside the EU. You cannot buy duty free collect on arrival for alcohol or tobacco when coming back to the UK as goods sold "tax free" to EU travellers are only VATable goods. Liquors and tobaccos have Excise Duty on them as well, this is why they are known as duty free. Many Spanish airports have "arrivals shops" now, but they do not sell tobaccos as they do not have an inbound "Estanco" licence for the sale of cigarettes etc.

I have recently flown from Liverpool to Majorca (July2011)

in the duty free at Liverpool JLA airport, they had large signs clearly stating you could buy your duty free here and "COLLECT" it when you return

now I'm not sure how this worked eg. whether you had to be flying outside the EU or whether this was a sales ploy

btw, do not buy any duty free at Palma airport, I bought Silk cut (for mother) they where 7 euro's a packet more, also just after I paid, someone queried why the prices where so much dearer than in the resort

& you don't go through a goods to declare etc at Palma, at least I've never seen people doing this, and we've been for the last 5 years
