We moved here last November, and Eon was suppyling the house. We stayed with them.

The house had been empty for just over a week before we moved in. Well, a couple of weeks in, we got a letter from Eon, with just our address on it, no names, saying there was, I think it was around £3+, and about £4 owing for gas and electric, giving the dates for when the house was empty.

I rang them, and they said they couldn't understand why a bill had been sent, as they said they had our readings from when we moved in which matched the readings the last tenant gave them. I told him there was an account number on there, but it wasn't ours. He said it didn't mean anything then, and to ignore the letter.

A few days later we got 2 letters, this time with different amounts on them, with a warning, that if we didn't pay up in 7 days, they would pass it to a debt collecting agency! I couldn't believe it!

This time, angry as hell, I rang them again, and said that they knew the house was empty. Why was Eon doing this to us? I told him that there was an account number on the letter but it wasn't ours. He said it was just a mistake and to ignore the letters. I asked him if he wanted the account number, but no he didn't want it.

About 2 weeks later, another letter came, again, with different amounts on it and this time it said they 'will' be sending the debt collectors out.

I rang again, and this time said that if a debt collector came here, Eon would be in trouble. He cut me off!!
So, I rang straight back and luckily spoke to a young lady with a head on her shoulders.

She asked me if there was an account number. I said yes, but nobody's interested in it. She took it and said she would put it in the computer to see if anything came up. She went strangely quiet, then in a bit of a surprised voice, she asked if she could ring me back.

She did, and said what came up was that it was the Council had done this, not Eon. She rang this council and told them the situation and it was all sorted out, and I wouldn't be getting any more letters.

She said she wasn't told why the council did this. I said, but the letters weren't from the council, they were from Eon.
Then she told me which council it was, and it wasn't even our council!! It was a neighbouring council.

Well, at least the letters did stop, but it still remains a mystery to me.

Hi, just to understand the situation fully, did you ring Eon on the day you moved in and register with them and give them your opening meter readings ?

    Hi Candy53,

This does sound odd to be honest, but I also wanted to ask the same as keith1950.

It sounds like there was an account created for the time the property was empty and this was closed when you moved in.

Is it a council house/rented or do you own this? I'm just wondering because sometimes housing associations advise us of tenants moving in and out and it could be here that has caused the confusion.

Glad it appears to be sorted though, but just sorry it took you so many calls :o

    Hi everyone,

The last tenant gave her final readings in, and the morning we moved in I set up an account with them, and gave my readings in. Cust services verified all this, and that's why they couldn't understand what was going on.

The young lady who contacted this council was as baffled as I was. She did ask them why they did this but they didn't tell her.

Although it was sorted out it still remains a mystery to me why the council, and why an outside council that had nothing to do with this property.

Anyway, I hope this mistake over the demands for money, are not on our Eon records as a debt. Only just thought of this.

    Hi Candy,

From your post it sounds like the balance was on another account without your name on, so it won't be linked to you or your account.

Have you got an online account? if you have you can view your payment history and account details.

  • If it's a council house, could it be that it was to cover for electric usage between tenants when maybe maintenance was being done? Not all councils have their own maintenance gangs, so maybe explains why a neighbouring council? Just a thought. :)

    Thanx,

I think you could have hit the nail on the head there. I hadn't thought of that. There were workmen in here in the time the house was empty.

    Thanx Helena,

It's a relief to know it won't be linked to us. I think it could have been our housing group that owed the money then with the workmen being in here.
It all fits into place now, at last.
