connecting wifi for ipod touch on holiday

Hi all,
We're trying to get wifi on my ipod touch 4 while we're in spain as we dont have a phone with us.
We were given a wep key by the manager of the place we're staying for the wireless. We got the laptop working, but the ipod touch won't also connect.
I've tried resetting the network settings, deleting the connection and reentering it, etc. There is a wifi address in the general settings: 58:55:CA:68:E9:CC. In the wifi settings, it seems to be connected, but the ip address starts with 169 so apparently it never was connected.
No matter what I try, it says, safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet.
Any help most appreciated

I posted the above in the middle of the night so hoping for daytime experts...0

My (tongue in cheek) advice is to switch the gadgets off, put them in a drawer, and enjoy your holiday.....0

I think WEP is the problem, as a lot of people seem to have issues with it.
There are suggestions that if you are using a WEP key (rather than a passphrase), then putting a $ sign in front of the key when you enter it into the password box on the ipod will work with some routers.0 -
Word to the wise, using "free" wi fi can let the hotel/restaurant see what your doing online if they are of that bent.
Most do it so you'll frequent their establishment often others are not so altruistic.
Wep is the weakest security key for wifi. Stick with pass phrases and only surf for local info not whats left in your bank account.
Happy Holiday btw...I'm sooooo jealous:)0
