There's a great chapter in Ben Goldacre's book Bad Science where he describes trials that show that branded drugs actually have greater efficacy over generic ones. Not because the active ingredients are any different (they're not), but purely because you subconsciously "trust" a known brand over a plain white label, and have a greater expectation that it will have the desired effect. Funny beasts, humans.

its true im doing my degree in pharmacy at the moment and took it as a bit of an interest. another thing is that the other added ingredients can give you different dissolution rates thus possibly making them work more slowly. i can however assure you that those thrush capsules work u used to sell a fair few in a week and always got people coming back to say that it had worked. they're the same as we used to give out on prescription too :) if you dont believe it works then it won't im a firm believer in that but at 18p its worth a try some people get recurrent thrush from things such as the contraceptive pill or diabeties and therefore dont want to spend £10+ on a treatment that they can get for less than £1. if it doesnt work for you its a bit of a pain :( i wouldnt want to spend £10 just because it comes in a pretty box that says canesten but some people are like that my friend will only ever use nurofen even tho they are super expensive x
