RBOS keeps cancelling my direct debits - why?

I have just discovered today by checking my online statement that RBOS has cancelled one of my direct debits which was due to run until next August. This is the second time that this has happened - last year they cancelled my council tax direct debit and I didn't discover it until I got a notice of arrears from the council. Phoned bank on that occasion, they apologised, and I accepted it as a mistake on their part.
But now it has happened again - obviously I shall phone the bank first thing on Monday morning. I will now want to know why this keeps happening - I thought only the account holder or the recipient could cancel a direct debit and I certainly haven't done it and I'm sure the company that it's payable to hasn't cancelled it either.
Just wondered if anyone else had ever had a similar problem?

Under the rules of the Direct Debit scheme, any Direct Debit mandate that has not been used to transfer money into your account for 13 months may be cancelled by your bank.Dagobert0

Hi Dagobert - these were monthly direct debits going out of my account to pay bills.

A bank can also cancel your direct debits if your account is over the overdraft limit. Actually they will suspend the DD facility on your account rather than cancel every one individually. Are you within any overdraft limits you have?Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0

Hi Being a recent ex employee of RBS, a DD will automatically get cancelled completely if the payment has been returned unpaid for 2/3 times. If there were plenty of funds in the account then I can't explain this to you. Call the branch anyway and they will be able to check who's cancelled it.0

Thanks for your input everyone. I am within my overdraft limits, and no payments have been returned unpaid. I shall phone tomorrow and report what happens.nyarlathotep0

hi there
i have been with RBOS for years. they are generally very obliging with the occasional big blip - like yours.
as you say, you accept it might be a mistake once - but twice?
i would ask them to investigate the situation fully as a complaint, so it doesn't happen again.
i would also ask them for some form of compensation for the hassle, all your time, phone calls and worry. plus the fact that after happening once, it has happened again!
good luck!0
