Gold coins??

I'm not sure where to put this thread so mods please feel free to move me if you think so.
My mother has given me some gold coins.. which have been passed on in the family and dates from around 1800, with Napoleon III on them (french side of family). My brother said that the only place where they are still worth something are in the London Stock Exchange.. why I don't know.. but then again.. i don't know how to find out.. Can anybody help? or do you know if they are worth something?
Your help is appreciated. Thank You.

    Hi, froggy,

Your brother has misinformed you. You can sell ( and buy ) gold coins in many places, including some jeweller's shops, but not, AFAIK, the LSE.

I have dealt with both of these places and am happy to recommend them -

I can't tell you how much the coins are worth, but I can tell you that they will be worth at least their weight in gold, so to speak ( currently $434/oz ). If they are collectors' coins they will be worth more. You may be able to find them for sale on one of the sites I have linked to; remember that a dealer will give you less for a coin than he is selling them for...
