Photo Scanning Services

Hi All,
Thinking about getting a load of old printed photos, that my father has collected over the years (Some dating back to the 20's or 30's, scanned so I can share them on the web.

Anyone have any recommendations as to which company to use as a quick Google search showed lots ?

Many thanks
Paul T

With scanners so cheap, why not do it yourself?

Also, maybe I'm overcautious, but I wouldn't be sending irreplaceable pictures away to ANYONE.

As they are likely to be irreplaceable, consider looking for someone local to you, maybe make an appointment where they will scan a few while you wait and hand them back to you there and then, and then contact you when they have loaded them on to a disc

Last month I sorted through my photo and slide collection and had my favourites transferred to disc.

Yes, it is possible to buy a scanner but each picture has to be done individually and assessed for brightness, contrast etc. I had 650 and didn't have the time, or patience, to do it myself. Furthermore, a commercial set up will have scanners of a far higher quality than I could ever afford.

I used a company in England and am delighted with the results, so much so that I am getting my next batch ready to send to the same company.

I do not like mentioning company names on this forum but if you message me I will send you the details.

    Hi All,
looked at the idea of doing it myself but would take ages to scan each picture. Thought I would use my time and get someone else to do the hard work ! :)

Still like the idea of an external company.

You don't have to scan each one individually, you can fill the scanner bed with them, it will sort them out.
  • The HP scanjet 5530 is a discontinued scanner which turns up sometimes on ebay. It has a photo feeder so you can do up to about 20 at a time. I have found this works pretty well and saves a lot of time even though the scans do need to be cropped one by one.
