Uses for carpet/underlay offcuts?

Hello everyone

I've just had some new carpets fitted and the fitter has left a huuuuge pile of various sized carpet and underlay offcuts. I would hate not to make use of them and have come up with the following uses so far, but does anyone have any other bright ideas?

- Put on the sides of my garage walls so the car door doesn't bang when i get out
- Make doormats
- Give away what I don't use on freecycle
- Cut into small squares and use under the feet of furniture
- Line the bottom of my cupboard
- Give some carpet to my dad for his garden (not sure how he plans to use it!!)

Hmmm there must be other thrifty uses...?

Thanks everyone! :)

Really useful in the garden - keeping the heat in and the rain off compost heaps and as groundcover/weed suppression in areas that need clearing and I think I read somewhere about cutting circles as collars round cabbage plants to stop cabbage root flies.

For round the house I like to have a spare piece of carpeting to roll out and protect any flat-pack I'm building as I have stone floors here in France. I guess it would also be useful for lining the boot of a car when taking stuff to the tip, assuming it's not the foam backed type - that foam always seems to break down and leave bits everywhere :)

Could make a 'runner' of carpet for high-frequency paths within the house... my hubby's parents have got one between front door and lounge to save the carpet there.

If your loft is boarded out, put some down up there - insulates, muffles sound if you're banging around above the bedrooms late at night (?!), "absorbs" dust, and just looks cosy :)

Make a matching rug or two to go in front of an open fire or wood burning stove - bind the edges with inusulation tape or similar of a matching colour. Saves sparks burning holes in new carpet but the floor space looks bigger then it would with a contrasing rug.

OOO...have you done that personally and did it work okay? I would have never thought of that...but I have a lot of offcut stuff myself stuck away wondering whether I would ever find a use for it..

I like the hanging baskets idea too....

Some of the 'old boys' at the alloment use little underlay squares with a slit cut into them around the stems of cabbages and broccoli etc to prevent the cabbage root fly from laying eggs around the stems..........of course this is only helpful if you happen to have a dozen vulnerable brassicas knocking about!:D

Yes, it works pretty well and keeps your feet warm - thick rubbery underlay is better than cheap carpet as if the carpet is cheap (mine was) it "rides up" under your foot and is very uncomfortable! Bit of trial and error was called for in getting the size right too.

Depending on the size of the offcuts, our local rescue centre uses pieces to line the pens of the animals so that it keeps them warm, but is disposable if they are ill or have an accident. My DH works for a carpet company, and he regularly takes samples to them, which is much appreciated.
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.
