You know nothing of the OP's life, so why not keep your opinions to yourself!Pay off all my debts before Christmas 2015 #165.0 -

Why all the negative comments? I have five kids - but we both work, I don't get child tax credits, have never had council tax benefit, housing benefit, working tax credits, have never claimed income support, jsa, free lunches. You know absolutely zilch about the OP, yet feel the right to flame them for having a large family? Not all of us count on the benefits system to support our families you know!0

99.99% of parents claim child benefit, 90% claim tax credits.92% of children go to state schools. The vast majority of children get NHS healthcare. Multiply that lot by 5 and we are talking millions. Child benefit for 5 kids for 16 years equals £61,482.80. We have the highest birth rate in Western Europe and the highest rate of teenage mothers. We need to stop all child related benefits.
Given that's all we receive, and our contributions to tax alone (not counting VAT, Council Tax) will equate to the region of £400,000....and then we pay NHS on top of that....I don't see that we are draining the system. Had we started our family here in the UK, I doubt we would've considered having five children - as it simply really is not affordable working for normal salaries, however, we had them in Canada where in reality, four and five children families are very common, and it's affordable to have them. (and no....we're not here bleeding anything as immigrants - any British family would have a reciprocal agreement in Canada that they would receive the child benefit element of tax credits immediately if they chose to move there).
Oh, all kids should be receiving child benefit till they reach 18 yrs old now - as now kids entering high school must remain in full time education till that time.
The thing is - there have been lots of negative comments on this thread aimed towards the OP - the thing that everybody has to remember - there is a benefits system in this country - and very few of us are no further away than a couple of months wages from having to rely on it. We don't know the OP's situation - she hasn't given it - so therefore no need to make such negative comments towards her on her thread.0 -
I suspect the OP is a troll.
On child related benefits though, CB will be means tested from 2013 won't it?Metranil dreams of becoming a neon,You don't even take him seriously,How am I going to get to heaven?,When I'm just balanced so precariously..0 -

We are an aging population, however, no matter what our birth rate might be, and we are living for longer. Who is going to look after us? If there is no incentive to have children, what will happen? do you think that if we had to pass some kind of test to have children which covered intelligence, motivation, strength of relationship, financial situation, many of us would have children? would you prefer that only intelligent, educated, 30 something professionals breed?
We live in a country with one of the oldest histories of true democracy in the world. People want to come here from poorer, less developed nations because it is possible to make a genuine living, to 'get on' in life and be able to provide for your family. We have a welfare state and health system to be proud of, where no one starves to death, everyone gets an education and gets medical treatment when required. Inevitably, some people will take advantage of that. But where would you prefer to live? In sub-Saharan Africa were people starve to death or the UK where, when you fall on hard times, your children still get educated, you can still walk into hospital with your arm falling off knowing someone will sew it back on and you can still feed your family? Do you want the right to vote or to be beaten at the polls for having 'subversive' views?
There is a massively bigger picture and context that needs to be considered. Suggesting that we should somehow curb the birth of children is not the answer to this country's problems(even if cutting benefits would do that which I don't believe it would). The vast majority of people who have children pay for them through their own hard work, topped up by a Government who values their existence and recognises the long-term value of having children.0 -

I wouldn't quite go that far but I do think we need to cap child related benefits. Universal Credit if it comes in will go a long way towards doing this. At present we have a carrot and no stick approach to having children. Extra benefits but no penaties for having children you can't afford...in some cases that the parents will never be able to support without loads of taxpayer funded supprt.0
