New to Ebay - Advice re postage

I've just discovered the delights of Ebay and have converted a few bits of junk into a moneysavers dream.
The last things I posted cost me more than expected, probably because I didn't take into account the weight of packaging. I didn't really lose money but didn't make as much profit as I could, had I charged accurate postage costs.
I've found some things to auction that are sizable and heavy. Can anyone tell me how to send them for a reasonable cost?
I found something that said Staples did a parcel service but can't find it anywhere on their website, i've done a google search and can't make head-nor-tail of which would be best.
Any advice?

I find the postal calculator on the RoyalMail site is useful (Yes,remember to weigh the item in the packaging<LOL).

I always offer a choice of 3 postal options,eg 1st class,2nd Class,Special Delivery and buyers usually chose the cheapest.I've found Royal Mail's Special Delivery service to be excellent ,although the price suddenly jumps by alot once you get to over 2kg.For larger items I've only used Parcelforce. At the time I used them it was before Xmas and I used the EBay £10 special and it was a nightmare to get through to them and then they suddenly decided they woudln't be doing same day collections. However once the items were picked up the delivery went smoothly.Their 48 hour prices are pretty reasonable and I think you save £1 if you go online to arrange the delivery.
Edited to add:I think the Staples service was one where you took the package into one of their stores and then they delivered it,but I could be wrong.0 -
yep the staples offer is in store,if you still wanna use royal mail i use their standard parcels service for heavy parcels(up to 20kg)takes 3/5 days to get there but prices are more reasonable.
