Hi , in response to earlier post i am putting my meter readings for users to look at and tell me if you think there is something wrong or not ?
I am with eon on fixed online til 2013
GAS ( in FT3 )
from 30th sept 2010 to 17th aug 2011
total units = 567 units
ELECTRIC ( my meter states 250 revs per KWH )
from 30th sept 2010 to 17th aug 2011
total units = 6785 units
These are the totals from the dates supplied and are actual meter readings i supplied online to eon covering roughly 11 month usage period.
I think my problem for high bills is stemming fron the electric side of things but if it seems too high to members then why , is there something wrong ?
Hope you understand how i have put the details , thanks.

Could you expand on your personal circumstances wrt energy usage? That gum you like is coming back in style.0

How many people is this for? What kind of property?0

That's roughly 18,000 kWh of gas (I can only do a rough calculation as I don't know the calorific value for your area). It's a fairly average ammount to be honest (slightly over the stated country-wide average, but not much over). Whether it's a lot or not depends on whether you're an average hosehold (2.4 kids and all the rest) really.I am an employee of British Gas, however the views expressed on this post are mine and do not necessarily reflect the views of Centrica, its subsidiaries or affiliated companies.0

Hi, regards circumstances, i have a 2 bed mid terrace in leeds , no central heating , we have a gas water boiler, 2 gas fires used only from september ish to march ish, 1 x lcd tv , 1 x A rated fridge freezer, gas cooker, washing machine and dryer but dryer rarely gets used more so through winter months , 1 x electric kettle.
2 adults and one child
?? not sure if my readings are average or not but regardless my monthly payment is crippling ??
and believe me we dont have a lavish life , i have made everything such as outgoings as cheap as poss, apart from things you cant dictate such as utilities.0 -
From the info. in your post 3, the gas use of appx 17,800 Kw seems extraordinarily high - This is the figure that might be expected for a mid terrace house with full gas C/heating, that was not very well insulated.
Gas fires are usually very inefficient with most of the heat going up the chimney, and if the Hot Water is stored in a tank and not instant from a geyser over the sink, just how good is the insulation on the water tank - In fact how good is the insulation throughout the house? - Plenty in the loft and some draught proofing are cheap and can make a big difference0 -

I agree with dogshome that on the face of it the figures seem high. For starters I would advise getting a handle on consumption by taking daily readings for a week, then weekly readings for a month. Repeat the excercise when the heating season begins.
Post your readings after couple of days and we will see.0 -
Hi DAREDEVIL78
Already some good advice on here. Thought I would just add a couple of things which might help.
We'll be happy to work with you to help reduce your energy usage. We have an Energy Efficiency team who specialise in helping customers cut back. Have a chat to them and tell them about your circumstances/appliances and they'll advise of any ways you might be able to cut back.
Ask for a booklet called '100 ways to save money by saving energy.' It's free and contains lots of useful tips.
Check out our website, too; particularly the Interactive House and Energy Fit campaign. More good ideas here.
Hope this is useful DAREDEVIL78. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.

Hi DAREDEVIL78 - Reading thro' the posts again, nothing about your Gas & Elec consumption seems to make sense, so it's worth checking all the basics.
1) Do the Meter Nos. on your bills match those the actual meters?
2) You say your gas is charged on a ft3 basis - Did you find this out from whats written on the bill, or is that what it says on the meter - Check the meter and if it's marked m3 tell your supplier immediately.
3) Your Elec bill is more than twice what would be reasonably expected, so do some checks:
Switch off everything and check that the meter has stopped moving.
If it does not you may have an Appliance/Wiring fault so call in a local Sparks
With everything else off, plug in an Elec Fire or Fan Heater with a 1Kw setting, run it for an hour then check the meter has used only 1 unit
If the meter shows more, repeat the test with a different appliance and if the result is the same, report this to your supplier in writing

Other than the gas fires how do you heat the house especially in winter??? Need to bear in mind we have just had one of the coldest winters in 100 years.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
