Asda bread flour doubling in price!

Went to Asda on Sunday to get bread flour and they didn't have my usual one in stock (68p per 1.5kg). They did have Allinsons for £1 per pack. I didn't get any because I had made bread that morning. Went in last night and they have jiggled the shelf around and put the smart price flour down in the bread flour hole and moved the bread flour up to the top. It is now £1.15 per bag. That's quite a price hike in 3 days. Surely to goodness it can't have doubled in price to source?
Allinsons is still £1 so stock up on that if there is any available because I can't see the price coming down for some time again.
Every time I sart making my own bread, this happens :(.

Have you got a Tesco nearby? Their own brand, which I always use, is 68p. I find it keeps for months and months and months too, so might be worth stocking up?
  • If you have a Lidl nearby, their bread flour is normally quite reasonable.

Get it quick then before they put it up!
Last time this happened, it didn't take very long for them all to follow suit and you couldn't get it for less than £1.10 per pack. I shall check out my local Tesco and see what they are up to, hopefully I can get some at the original price. Otherwise I'm going to have to go back to half and half bread :(

Time to pop to asda then I suppose, stock up the storecupboard- although I wouldn't be surprised if it 'rolls back' in a few days!

Kaz, what's half and half bread like -does it make very different bread, or is it more difficult to work with?....and wow, congratulations on your signature!

I do hope so katkins! Think it will take some time though. I'm ashamed to say that when it flew up last time, I stopped making my own because it was cheaper to buy it. I only realised a couple of months ago that it had gone down in price so much so I started making my own again. Now it's gone up. Maybe it's me? My BiL always says that I bring the rain with me ;) so maybe I've jinxed flour prices too :o :rotfl:

Still 68p in my local Asda. Might just be a mistake with shelf price try taking it to CS and see what it scans at.

I hope it hasn't gone up that much, I am just about to re- stock on bread flour. Has anyone bought bread flour recently? How long is it dated for? I am wondering if I could put some in my winter emergency boxes yet. It was impossible to get here in the long spell of deep snow last winter.

As long as it is stored correctly, flour should keep for years. I buy Atta flour (finely milled, wholemeal, Indian bread flour) by the 10kg bag and store it in the really large Lock-n-Lock boxes. The boxes are air tight and water tight so Weevels and other nasties can't get in and the flour stays totally dry. I need two boxes to store all that flour.

Last time I stocked up, the bag of flour cost £4.99, so 50p a kilo. I use it for everything.
