Problem with dvd recorder/AV1 sound

Hi, I have been away on holiday and now on return the dvd recorder played through AV1 has no sound!!
I have an LG tv which is attached to Sky HD by HDMI cable all fine.
The video/dvd recorder is attached with scart leads and plays through AV1.
My husband recorded a programme from sky onto disc(dvd -ram) as normal and when he played it back there is no sound!! Tried playing a normal dvd and still no sound. also switched the dvd recorder onto bb1 etc still no sound!!
We tried a different scart lead and no sound.
When we switch the dvd recorder off completely, whatever is on sky is playing in the background, but still with no sound!! Can't remember if it was like this before we went away!!
Can anyone help or have any ideas that I can try??? I am not very technical so please explain simply!!
