Newsgroup Help Required please

Options
Hi all

I was wondering whether anyone had any information as to how to set up my newsgroup up

I am with an ISP which gives me 10 gig allowance each month but I dont know how I go about setting it up. The provider did give instructions and I did manage to set it up. But since then, I have had to format my pc and now cannot remember how to do it.

In addition, I have heard that newsgroups allow downloads at really fast speeds. Is this true? And if so, does anyone know of any sites where I could download music and films from?

Thanks in advance

Every ISP' newsgroup settings will be different, so go to your ISP's support pages on their website for the necessary settings for your newsreader.
 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:
  • it depends which newsreader you use,and you can get music and films but you have to have a very good newsserver that dosnt drop many posts and most ISP newsservers are rubbish i've downloaded 100s of films but i think its not allowed to discuss here:money:
you need a newsreader with multi server connections to d/l a 4gb+ dvd,OE is rubbish for that

You need to get some news reading software (I just use the client built into my email software Thunderbird, Outlook/Outlook Express also has basic newsreading software). However, power users may prefer specialist software.

You'll need to set up access to the news server, this will be straight forward, the only thing you need to know is the server address. It'll probably be ntp.<your ISP's domain>, but if not try searching their support pages to find out.

Binary newsgroups carry files, and since you're downloading them directly from your ISP the speeds are usually quite fast. Large files are posted as multipart messages, so you'll need software capable of handling them. Of course, downloading copyrighted material from newsgroups is illegal.
