This is impossible to do as any debit card/bill payment/standing order/direct debit can take any Santander bank account into an unauthorised overdraft

Well possibly. If only through the application of "unpaid item" fees. Standing orders could be refused (at a fee) and direct debits could be returned (at a fee). Which would surely have wised-up the poster that something was not right.

Perhaps that is what you are saying, but the extent of the overdraft is hard to explain without a failure of Santander to manage a recurring issue. Or the poster ignored (or overlooked) such a communication. Or failure to implement what the poster thought was "no overdraft". Or (more likely) the (perhaps inadvertant) removal of such an agreed control without explicit notice.

What statement arrangements were in place I don't think has yet been explained.

But then the unpaid or paid item fees would still take them into an unauthorised OD state at some point anyways. If an item was 'paid' then instantly they're in the unauthorised OD territory with further charges due, if, say, a DD was returned as unpaid, then in the not-too-distant future, the fee for THAT mistake will kick in. Taking them into an unauthorised OD. ;):p

If you read my post again I think you will see that I accepted that.

What I am trying to "tease-out" is how such a situation was managed when it arose. Or not.
  • Hi

Just to let you all know, i had a telephone call today from a gentleman at the complaints department of Santander. He told me that he was very sorry for the way my account has been dealt with and said that all charges have now been cleared. He has asked me to check my account in a couple of weeks to make sure no more charges appear. It just goes to show that standing your ground pays off!!!
