Boot problem

I have been given a pc to sort out (sigh) with what looks like a boot problem. It will not go past the second black screen during bootup reporting that NTLDR is missing. This has come about after a friend tried to fit a secondary HDD as a slave to this (his) pc. Any advice on this missing file, and solution
