Want to learn how to plaster - Where Do I Go?

Oh dear.., be careful with revamping a bathroom lol.
I bought a bath with fixed sides (including taps and waste) at a very good price. Decided to place it against the far wall, removing the corner bath that took up half the room.
Only problem is, I ended up removing the tiles (as I couldn't find replacement tiles to cover the bare patches this left on the wall.
Discovered the wall where the shower was was damp (leaking elbow joints) and a door cavity on another wall had been filled with anything (ply, rubble, god knows what else), that was damp as well so my OH called in a favour and he got a plasterer friend to come round.
I also discovered the nasty smells I thought were coming from the toilet were actually coming from badly fitted and leaking waste pipes.
Used a dehumidifier to dry the walls and floor out, thanks to ebay.
When I phoned the landlord he just laughed and said that's what u get for messing. He had said that we could come to some arrangement about the rent if I redid the bathroom but I suspect that conversation will be forgotten once its done. Yep I now have the words 'nieve fool' tatooed on my forehead.
All I can say is my name is mud in the house right now and quite rightly! But it will be a hundred times better once its done. I have been taking photos so if the landlord should try to put up the rent because of this work, he's going to have a fight on his hands. And a claim for costs.0 -
Yes thats exactly my point and the "makey learny" amateur won't be able to accomplish the task you describe if he takes a month of Sunday's doing it.There is a huge difference between being able to do it well enough to plaster an average sized wall in your home, and doing it for a living.
100%.But the OP should not consider learning ... I think plasterers earn their money!

So you have back pain but want to learn how to plaster?
I wouldn't0 -
If you have problems with your back, under no circumstances should you consider doing anything but the most trivial plaster repair.deannatrois wrote: »... I'm doing it because my back can get quite bad and I have children to look after, I can't afford to be disabled with back pain. Pills help but I don't like taking them for too long, its not going to just go away., so baths help. The corner bath just doesn't do the job, I can't fill it deep enough and its a combi boiler so takes an hour to fill lol.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I am not sure what point you are making, or what a "makey learny" amateur is. If the task referred to is to plaster one wall, then yes a DIY'er can learn to do that in a reasonable time, as one of my colleagues proves as he plastered a wall in his house. I learnt to patch holes in my walls, some up to 8" across, and they are invisible. I also have colleagues who fitted their own kitchens, bathrooms, ceilings and so on. It does require a certain degree of practical sense, and a methodical approach. And there are some people who will never learn to do these tasks.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -

Never mind then it really doesn't matter that much. We are clearly on different wavelengths at times but neither of us should lose sleep over it. Life is too short for that.I am not sure what point you are making, or what a "makey learny" amateur is.
