Hi all

Got a quote for a boiler feed needs moving.

Hence asked a 'trician has quoted £30 an hour plus parts for the boiler feed move (approx 3M across garage to a different wall).

Does this sound fair?

Thanks in advance

  • I charge £35 per hour, I have an apprentice and charge this at all times

This week he is not onsite (at college). I still have to pay him so I still charge the same rate.

    This is a fair rate.

Not having a dig at the OP, but people don't bat an eyelid about major car dealerships charging £55 per hour, but moan about tradespeople charging £30-£35 per hour
    baldly going on...

    Cheers for the response.

I know you're not having a go but I'd bat more than an eyelid at £55 an hour! I am a time served fomer electrician and to pay anyone multiple factors of what I currently earn means I probably made the wrong career move then!

Where is that advert for car salesman required?

I do work for 2 local well known car dealerships
They charge mechanic time at £50 and £55 per hour (plus vat), a mechanic is more comarable to an electrician as far as trade experience goes

A 100k salary (if able to get the work for 40 hours a week at £55 per hour) I find quite frankly vulgar for most jobs let alone a mechanic / 'trician / car salesman. And that's not belittling these vocations just my opinion.

Maybe am just living in a different age!

Lots of IT contactor jobs out there at 350-425 a day, you can't compare employed with self employed either.

IT professionals, thats anything from a desktop support job(15k) to a IT lecturer(£28 a hour) to a Oracle whizz (£500 a day).

A lot of the £55 a hour goes on equipment, insurance, premises.

    You are missing the point

    An example.
Yesterday was a day when I spent the time sourcing materials, dealing with wholesalers, doing a quote and did 1 small job
    Total income from until 1pm = £35.00.

You seem to think that an hourly rate means that someone can charge the rate all day every day.

You seem to forget that people want a tradesperson out to quote and give free advice, but expect the quote for free (as it almost always should be, I charge for insurance quotes and give discount off the job if I get it)

I don't dictate what others charge, but I made the car dealership point to give an example

as far as free quotes go- how many hours free labour do most people who work for an employer do per week?
I haven't heard anyone saying to their boss- ''don't pay me for the last 3 hours, have it on me'' :rotfl:

IF! It just doesn't happen. I charge £45+VAT and I wish I made 50K a year never mind 100K. Your not looking at the whole picture. Your electrician has costs. He will be running a vehicle which needs fuel, maintenance, insurance and road tax. He has qualifications to up-keep. Memberships to professional bodies. He may have business premises. Have you any idea how much business rates are theses days? Tools, public liability insurance, accountants fees, etc, etc.
It is also impossible to charge every hour of the day. You can't ( well I don't) charge to get to or between a job. You'll get slack days. Suddenly that £35 an hour your electrician charges is starting to look a bit low. I reckon he needs to put up his rates!
