Eon won't give me free cavity wall insulation

I have just signed up for Eon's warm assist tariff and one of the conditions for this tariff is that they will give me cavity wall insulation and loft insulation for free.

The surveyor came and looked in the loft and said I had sufficient insulation, which is correct, as I did it when B&Q had their £1 a roll loft insulation sale.

However he said that although my walls were suitable for cavity wall insulation, Eon would not pay to have it done because I would need scaffolding as I have a pitched roof garage at the side of the house on the gable end.

Another triumph for health and safety.

    Try again later.

They just refer the work to a list of companies,
some of which are more picky than others.

They just want to squirt and go, there is no money for anything with a hint of extra work.

Had exactly the same reaction ~3 years ago from another Company referred by S.Power - wouldn't do the cavity walls because of the attached garage(with pitched roof) and the lack of working space on the other gable end of the house and secondly, wouldn't do the loft lagging for the advised price because of lack of "safe" headroom, wanted an unspecified amount of extra ££s!!How many people have got unlimited headroom in their lofts!!

Also, the small print of the free cavity walls insulation offers stipulate a maximum size; our 3-bed semi was just inside the limit.

    Hi Retire,

I am sorry that you are not able to have the cavity wall insulation without the extra cost.

This is not my area of expertise at all :o but I can try and give you the info I do know.

The call agent wouldn’t necessarily go into detail of the practicality of installing the insulation, it would be more on whether the brickwork indicates whether the property could receive it.

It sounds as though scaffolding is needed in this case as you can’t climb on a pitched garage roof to do the work.

The scaffolding is then an extra that the customer would need to pay for.

If you want to have word with us about this more specifically, then I would advise you to speak with the Cavity wall and loft insulation department at E.ON (you probably spoke to them to book the appointment)

Sorry I can't be of more help.

    Helena :)

    Hi Helena,

The surveyor did also say that although my walls have cavities, the internal walls are already insulated because when the house was built the internal walls had 4 inches thick polystyrene insulation put on them. Dab and dot insulation he called it.

He also said, because of this, the cavity wall insulation would be lucky to save 10%, if that, on my heating bills.

However if it wasn't for the fact that I needed scaffolding, he would have recommended the cavity wall insulation.

Now for some good news, I just got a letter today from Eon stating that my warm assist tariff would not be increasing in cost, unlike all their other non fixed tariffs.
