Faulty Fridge

We bought a Hotpoint fridge for £275 18-19 months ago from Laskys( Comet group). Laskys on the phone tried to avoid even mentioning the SOGA and went straight into a spiel about £ 130 + repair charge.
When I mentioned SOGA they said " oh you want to go down that route"
then said not interested and it would still be £65 regardless as a minimum that would not be refunded.
in writing they say
"We will not charge you for repairs carried out under the guarantee period. However, if the manufacturer’s guarantee or extended warranty on your product has expired, repairs are chargeable"
Whilst I appreciate your comments about the Sale Of Goods Act, it is not the equivalent of a guarantee and does not hold the retailer responsible for faults that develop after purchase. There needs to be a fault that was present on the day of sale even though it only became apparent later on, or an incorrect description of the goods, or a l ack of durability that suggests the goods were not of satisfactory quality to start with.
In this case, as your appliance has been working for 19 months and there is no evidence of a manufacturing defect, we feel that it was of satisfactory quality when sold and, as such, I am unable to agree to your request for a repair to be completed free of charge"
call me cynical but I think they are completely avoiding any responsibility
are they right?

You need to get a report which shows the problem and it's causes (i.e. to show that it's an inherent problem with the item).
Without such proof, they are quite right in offering a chargeable repair.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Retailers must get sick and tired about people coming in and spouting off about SoGA, 6 years, 2 year EU warranty, should last longer that, etc ,etc, etc.
Ha, yes. We had a lady today who bought a cordless phone 2 and a half years ago for £70, then said she was unhappy because we'd offered her £35 without asking for proof of fault or anything...but it "should have lasted longer".Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you.
