RAM Any experts out there please

ive just taken the ram from my dell inspiron it clearly states 256 ddr 333mhz on it yet when i check in the os it reports 512 , less a few B for video i presume.
the laptop only takes 1 stick ....odd
i also need to add a stick to my wifes laptop , she has an acer 2414 wlmi with 256 of ram (os reports 256) its a celeron and is 256 mb ddr2
her ram will not go in my machine or vice versa .
cant find what mhz her machine needs .... we want to up it to 512 at least
any ideas what we need please , any cheap places to buy from or is ebay the best
