RAM Any experts out there please

ive just taken the ram from my dell inspiron it clearly states 256 ddr 333mhz on it yet when i check in the os it reports 512 , less a few B for video i presume.

the laptop only takes 1 stick ....odd

i also need to add a stick to my wifes laptop , she has an acer 2414 wlmi with 256 of ram (os reports 256) its a celeron and is 256 mb ddr2

her ram will not go in my machine or vice versa .

cant find what mhz her machine needs .... we want to up it to 512 at least

any ideas what we need please , any cheap places to buy from or is ebay the best

or is there a website that gives make model then ram type required etc

which Dell Inspiron..there is normally 2 slots, 1 clips in over the top of the other

It could be that there is 256MB on board with an expansion slot, which also has a 256MB memory stick in there, hence making 512MB total.
