Hi there, I've been quoted £125 by Talktalk to get an engineer out to fix the master socket. Unfortunately a decorater pulled it from the wall so cables are loose etc. Any ideas on alternatives. It feels like a rip-off. Any help appreciated. Currently I'm without phone or broadband.

I just connected to Plusnet for £50. Err, but all I had was a wire sticking out of the edge of the window. No phone sockets indoors at all - bit of a mess really. Plusnet had to send out BT to sort it, but they did sort it quickly & effectively & only cost me £50. Money well spent I think.
Maybe change your phone provider?0 -
Deduct the £125 from the decorator's bill, or if you have already paid him then send him an invoice for the outstanding amount.0

It is illegal to touch this yourself, you must get openreach to sort it. If you are interested you can find which wires openreach will connect to which terminal here http://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/wiring_info.htm
If the socket is broken you can see the sort of thing he will replace it with here http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=bt+nte5+&_sacat=0&_odkw=nte5+genuine&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313

Just buy a mastersocket off ebay or other on line suppliers. Its a simple matter of connecting two wires. It isnt rocket science. Never mind about the illegal bit.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

I would get myself a little flat headed screw driver, and pop the 2 screws out.
The bottom section will pull away showing the master socket that it plugs into. I would remove this cover, and take a peek inside to see whats wrong.
If its just loose wires, then i would take that screw driver and tighten them up.
To secure to the wall, you could re-drill & screw up etc.
If by then, its not fixed. I would then pay the £125.0 -
Decorator broke it, decorator pays for it.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

All, thank you for the range and depth of responses. I am seriously impressed!! I phoned an independent phone engineer who kindly talked me through the different wires, it turned out that the 2 that were not connected are for a 2nd line which I don't have anyway. As such a cheap purchase of a new cover and all working again. And I've saved £125!0
